They had May/Walsh in the NBC studios for a short interview following the USA/Brazil quarterfinal broadcast.
Wow. They are terrific. Articulate, likeable, and model spokespeople for the sport. They were gracious to Youngs/McPeak, and Shelde/Behar as well.
If you look at the history of the sport, it favors long-term partnerships over the normal merry-go-round of partner switching. I hope that fact isn't lost on May/Walsh. The best teams in the U.S., and even now on the FIVB, are the ones that stick together. Smith/Stoklos, Kiraly/Steffes, Kirby/Masakayan, and even the Brazilians are all examples of that.
Approaching the creepiness factor - May spreading her mom's ashes on the court in Athens. It's not like spreading it in the ocean or in the mountains - people have to play on that court after you leave, ya know.

When i was told about the ashes thing i didn't know whether to to think good or bad! But like someone else said you could see it in her eyes, that it meant so much to her family and her mothers dreams for her! Sad and happy for Misty!

I'm always impressed by the way Walsh and May conduct themselves off the court and especially on camera. It's so refreshing compared to a lot of the track athletes who come off as either moronic or self-centered.
I also thought the ashes on the court was a bit odd. I'm sure it meant a lot to May but it is a playing field that's being used by athletes from dozens of different cultures and belief systems. Some people (myself included) might not appreciate playing and diving in someone's burial ground. She could have done it discreetly, in an area away from the court.

In the interview, Walsh said that she will stick with May until May "kicks" her out.
What about Kerri Walsh and Logan Tom on the Beach?

The indoor VB commentator (Jim Watson?) would love to see a Stanford team on the beach. I don't think he got through a single match without talking about Logan or Oganna's connection to Stanford at least a dozen times. People at home wouldn't have known if any of the other players went to college.

Both were also the first set of US athletes interviewed by Matt Lauer on the Today show at 7AM Eastern, so for those of you in the other time zones, don't forget to set your VCRs. I agree that both are very articulate and when Lauer said they were the 1st ever Women's VB medalists for the US, they pointed out nicely that the Bronze medal game was played earlier and that Young and McPeak technically have that honour.

May/Walsh are in the promo ads for Jay Leno. Looks like they're going to be getting a lot of T.V. face time. I wonder if this will inspire thousands of girls across America to break free of the stuffy gyms and head to the beach.
It would be an interesting poll to see how many people even know that USA has an indoor volleyball team. That could have been Logan and Stacy on the Today Show if they had played up to their potential. The reality of a low-profile sport like volleyball is that there's no exposure and promotion until there are huge accomplishments, as in Olympic Gold.

I saw Matt and Katie interview them (once just the two of them and the other with Holly and Elaine). Walsh and May are just incredible in front of the cameras. So genuine and gracious to everyone.
And then there's EY. Uggggh. Just "BLAH BLAH BLAH" about herself. I just wanted to send her a telegram that said, "Yes, Elaine, we all know you're good, but you're DEFINITELY NOT as good as Misty or Kerri so give it up already."

In the interview, Walsh said that she will stick with May until May "kicks" her out. What about Kerri Walsh and Logan Tom on the Beach? Beach game is totally different than indoors. Although May, Walsh, and Tom are all tremendously gifted and talented athletes with tremendous indoor pedigree and credentials, there's no guarantee that Walsh/Tom would be better than Walsh/May. Besides, May has always been a beach player that converted to indoor. Tom, like Walsh, would have to pick up the game. Additionally, in the Tom/Walsh pairing, someone would have to move to the right - and it will take a long, long time for either of them to become as good as May on the right. Barring any kind of falling out (which is highly unlikely), May/Walsh should stay together for as long as they are successful, which at present (and barring more injuries) looks like it's gonna be for a long, long time. You can play beach volleyball at a high level well into your late 30's (even into your mid-40's as Kiraly has demonstrated).
