Honestly I thought Jenna was under-rated all year. Everyone was talking about Carlini, SSS, Hunter, Chloe Collins, etc. All this time I was thinking "no one realizes how good Jenna Gray is." Great defense, great blocking, and tremendous decision making. She knows where to put the ball. Great instinct at the net; amazing at digging tight passes out of the net and putting up great sets from those passes. Wins all her jousts, and knows when to go over on two. If I could knock her for one thing, it would be for setting Inky too low many times throughout the season. But she certainly was setting Inky well at the end. I was stoked to have Jenna as our setter all year, and am stoked that we will have her for three more years. Jenna rocks!

I thought her blocking and floor defense was exceptional towards the end. And I know a Setter does not a whole team make, but it's worth noting that her head to head (albeit a small sample size) against Carlini, SSS, Collins, Poulter, Tanner, and Snuka is a combined 8-1.

I said, mostly on the basis of prep videos, that she looked like an ace, and she proved me right. I think her left pin setting still needs work, but you could say that about just about every setter. Her defense isn't stellar either, but both of these minor deficiencies will improve. She has that deadly combination of skill, athleticism, and decision-making that makes my heart go pitty-pat.

I don't see any reason to remove this thread. If someone wants to criticize a player's skills, that's also their right. But I would hope we could be civil about it.
Anyhow, the other thread was moved far, far, away.

Gray was exceptional at the end of the season. She outplayed both setters in the Final Four and set an outstanding last 3 games against Wisconsin. She might be the best frontcourt setter in the nation next year with her ability to attack on two and put up a great block. I don't think she is as strong at setting as SSS or a couple other setters, but she is very good in this regard and is going to continue to improve. She does a fantastic job with tight sets and has such a calm/solid demeanor. With Inky/Plummer/Hentz it's easy to overlook her, but she was every bit as pivotal as anyone over the last 4 matches. I could easily see her winning 1-2 more titles during her time at Stanford and nabbing AA honors the next 3 seasons.

She was a highly decorated player in high school, she's won a national championship in her only year in college - only the second freshman to do so, and she very well may win another one, so it's foolish to say she isn't at least very good, but in the little bit I've seen of her I certainly get why nobody is comparing her to Carlini or SSS. She isn't there yet.

I was really surprised when the nationals came around. I hadn't watched much volleyball and there seemed to be little discussion about Gray. I was incredibly impressed watching her for the first time. National title and possessed great leadership skills. Great blocks, setting, and even attacking. I like her!

And no one so far has mentioned her serving. A very, very strong server who went on huge runs throughout the season.
I'm still most impressed with her net play though. She had to have won 85% of her jousts this season, and is deadly on the dump. Fantastic pin blocker as well.

I think SSS has better and more consistent location than Jenna (though both struggled at times in the semifinal), and their back row defense (slightly above average) and serving (excellent) are about the same. Blocking and attacking is advantage Gray. I think every team in the country not named Illinois would trade their current setter for either one in a heartbeat.

Her location and footwork Holds her back. She could be great if she got those down. A lot of hype, due to size and athleticism, imo
