i'm watching some videos of a gamer named zero master going through doom eternal on ultra-nightmare difficulty. it's just incredible to watch how the gamer moves through the levels.

I've been playing mainly Gloomhaven and XCOM Long War. Both turn-based tactics. Then last night (kind of randomly) I loaded up a save of a base I had been building in Factorio.
Played it for several hours, and it did that things that Factorio always does. Everything is working, but you are a little behind on one resource. So you build a new supply stream for it. But that means now you fall behind on a different resource. So you start thinking about fixing that. And your mining operation starts to run dry. And the dang biters start attacking. And all of a sudden it feels like the more you do, the more you need to do.
I can't believe I played this game for as long as I did without a couple of mods I'm using right now. One is very simple -- it just uses "loaders" to directly feed belts into and out of containers. The other is much more complicated -- it's a system for automating trains. Instead of setting up train routes between places that provide supply and places that have demand, you set up a train depot. And then you network all your stations. When a station indicates it has a demand and another station indicates it has a supply. the mod automatically assigns a train from the depot to go collect the cargo from the supply and take it to the demand. It's fantastic.

Age of Z Origin
Moving along in this game, maybe I'm too strong so that no one wants to fight me...which is good enough for me.
Best part of this game is the Tower Defense, where waves of zombies come rushing out and I need to position the four towers (machine gun, laser, missiles, and EMP) to eliminate these Zs. Been doing ok with it, until this one in stage 15. Waves and waves of Zs come pouring out of the bunker and had no idea how to defeat them. Couldn't even finish the stage because there were just too many of them.
Then I figured it out. I usually position the same towers in pairs, across the road from each other. Good part is, they can do quite the damage. Bad part is, both towers can target the same threat, thereby leaving the other zombies to rush on by. So I staggered them...at the entrance of the bunker I would put a missile launcher (to do widespread damage) on one side, and a machine gun on the other. Next, I would pair up an EMP (to slow down the zombies) and a laser, followed by a machine gun and EMP. Key was to position the EMP so that the main road is covered, and the zombies would stroll down main street slowly allowing my guns do their damage. First time I stumbled on this I finished with 14pts out of 20 (where 20 is a perfect score...no Zs got through). Then a 16, and finally a 20.
Lasers are the best, the longer the laser hits the target the higher the damage. Machine guns are the next best, where the damage is consistent from start to finish. Missiles can soften up the Zs, and if you build it to level 3 or 4 then the damage is higher. But its slow.
Love these challenges!

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition begins with a short prologue mission, and then you end up on the Citadel, which is the capital of "Citadel Space," the large swath of the Milky Way that is governed by the Citadel Council. This includes humans and a multitude of other species. I finished the main quest in this area, which involves the character becoming the first "Spectre," which is an elite group of special forces agents that can basically do whatever they want and answer only to the authority of the Council. The Council itself is made up of just three people, one representative each of the dominant species in the galaxy, which are the Salarians, Turians and Asari. I also did a number of side quests before embarking on my first major mission, which I recall being rather difficult on insanity even with a maxed-out character, and I'm doing it with a new character. I have done some research on tactics for this mission, but we'll see how it goes.

I've made some more progress in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. I completed a main story mission in which the final party member is recruited. There is a tough boss at the end of this mission, though it wasn't quite as bad as I remembered, mostly because I think I had a better gameplan this time around. In all the Mass Effect games, a lot of fights can be made easier by retreating from the battle to find better cover and then using a sniper rifle or powers to take out the enemies at range. Charging or flanking enemies are by far the most annoying, so it helps to be able to deal with them before they get too close.

Gloomhaven is really quite fun, even as a single-player game. I can see why it's so popular as a tabletop game.
Consider the band I have in play right now.
Mindthief: a little rat-like creature, low HP, no armor, but very fast and hits *hard*, plus has a lot of stunning attacks (enemy loses a turn) and a couple ways to become invisible (immune to attack) Sunkeeper: a tanky paladin-type who can buff her nearby allies, take hits, and hit back hard Beastmaster: another little rat creature, very low HP, generally just sits there and doesn't even move, but controls a giant bear who does massive, massive damage -- the bear isn't as tanky as you might think, but the Beastmaster has ways to heal the bear or even to take wounds in place of the bear taking them Tinkerer: a healer who keeps everybody else alive, but also some some minor ranged attacks (and a few AOE attacks that can only be used once)

i am rapidly becoming disillusioned with dark souls remastered. i would rate my performance right now as an "F-". i am convinced that, without the availability of the internet, i would not be able to progress in this game.
that irritates me to no end. i am starting to feel exactly the same way i did when i rage quit the game back in 2019

Dark Souls is legendarily frustrating and hard. I'm not sure what you were expecting, particularly since you have played it before.

The Dark Souls games and others from that studio have never been particularly appealing to me. I got Bloodborne free through PS Plus, so if I ever feel like trying one of them, I'll try it. I'm guessing that day will never come, though, as I have plenty of games I actually want to play to get to first.

I'm guessing that day will never come, though, as I have plenty of games I actually want to play to get to first. bloodborne was the first one i tried and i liked it well enough. i enjoy the harder games - dark souls 2, dark souls 3, nioh, nioh 2, sekiro, etc.
dark souls is presenting a unique challenge in that i have no idea where to go. i expect the boss battles to be difficult but i should be able to at least find them.
much teeth gnashing and hand wringing
