Any report from the Husker scrimmage tonight? I wasn't able to go How did each player do? And did the scrimmage help anyone piece together a workable lineup for this season? Who was the better setter...and best Outside Hitters? Those seem to be the burning questions. I bet the games were exciting!

Since this was a general admission night for everyone, it was sort of a return to the old days where you had to stand outside in lines for quite awhile to get in. I think the crowd was around 3000 or so.
The Nebraska Alumni played against each other first and we got to see the "old" stars like Laura Pilacowski, Cathy Noth, Mandy Monson, Lori Endicott, Val Novak and many others. That was quite a treat and they can still play well too.
Then the 2004 squad took the court and it was quite a treat. You can really tell the "A" team yet becasue Stalls was away at a funeral and Mancuso didn't play because of an injury (don't know what but saw no limps or favored limbs of any sort). Jen S. and Christina Houghtelling played OH for the "A" team, Meghan Smith and Melissa Elmer played middle, Amanda McCormick was the L, Pavan played RS and Busboom was the setter.
Pavan had 6 kills on her first 6 touches of the ball. On the "B" team, since they were short, one of the Volunteer Assistance (Bill Egbert) played middle the whole time. He is about 6-4 and covers the women's court very well but Sarah hit around him every time. She could hit angles, lines cut cross court, anything. They finally dug one and Bill did block her and then she got several more in a row down. She had a few service aces as well and played surprisingly well on defense. Certainly not afraid to hit the floor and gets kills fro the back row too. I'm sure she will play all around.
If I was a setter, I would be very tempted to set her everytime no matter where she is on the court. That will keep the defense very nervous about any other player because they all can terminate.
Christina Houghtelling played pretty decent in the back row too and got some nice kills from the OH. Jen played great on both offense and defense. If there was talk about her playing L, forget it I would say. I think McCorrmick has that spot and Jen has to be on the court all the time. She just steadies everything out there and has a infectiously great attitude.
The A team won 3-0 with all the first one being about 30-20 but the others being much more competitive.
Its going to be a great year to be a Husker.

Pavan definitely impressed us with her skills both offensive and defensive. Her serving skills impressed also as she had the 3 aces but also her serving really kept the white team off balance even though she never aced them. Pavan is definitely the real deal and it looks like she will live up to all of her hype.
Houghtelling is going to be a stud whether this year or in the future. It looks like she has trimmed down some even more since I last watched her play in the spring. Her passing skills are really very good. Houghtelling didn't jump serve any as I'm sure that the coaches are trying to protect her knee some.
Busboom is really looking comfortable running the offense and she no longer looks like the scared freshman as she did at times last year. Busboom's arm problem that she had the last part of the season that wouldn't let her jump serve anymore appears to be over as she really ripped the ball. Busboom's athleticism really shows and I think that she is learning how to make the athletic plays but yet still get a good set off.
Elmer really impressed at times. One time in particular she just hammered the quick set right over the top of Bill Egbert.
Jen Saleaumua was her usual steady self. With Pavan being unstoppable Jen didn't really take so many swings nor did she need to.
Meghan Smith did have the most blocks but I was unimpressed with her hitting.
With the white team being short handed since Stalls was gone and Mancuso was ill it was a little hard to determine their play. Charlene and Bill did a fine job filling in.
I was really disappointed in not being able to see Stalls play. I'll just have to wait until next weekend when I will go out to South Bend to watch the Huskers take on the Irish.
One future Husker star (Jordan Larson) was in the crowd sitting by Houghtelling's mother intently taking in the action.
Only at NU and possibly one or 2 other schools could a school ever charge $6 per ticket for a scrimmage and get as many people to attend as what NU did. Heck, from what I seen in the past some of the colleges don't even charge that much for the regular season.
For all of you who have said that NU can't pass, well watch out because they are a lot better. Last year's inconsistency because of so many freshmen playing looks like that it no longer there in any of the facets of the game. NU is going to be a very, very, very good team!

I too was impressed by Pavan. She's just a great all around player and just a freshman wow. Busboom has improved but still can't set a quick attack consistantly which sucks given how athletic Melissa Elmer is and assuming Tracy Stalls will be just as powerful. Elmer got a lot of kills by tipping due to mis timing of the sets. Hopefully that will improve. Busboom did play some amazing defense. This team is going to be very good. I read in the paper that Mancuso had strep throat.

This must be the origin of "...ain't nothin' to do but watch the corn grow..." All other practices are closed to the general public, so this was the first and only chance for most fans to see the Huskers until the third weekend of the regular season when they host, Florida A & M, Ball State and Maryland. . . . and officially they had 2808 (mostly @ $6) in attendance. IMO, a fairly good value for your entertainment $$'s.

Good to hear the passing has improved, but it's not like we were making it up. They haven't been able to pass--or play defense--the last two years. I've got to agree with you. Nebraska has always seemed to be best on offense and at blocking and weakest on defense in digging and passing the ball - even in their champion and final four seasons. Now last year, they weren't too strong on offense either but I had a hunch that's about to change.
