Well, I'm not sure if it is still like this under their current coach. But one of the biggest things that Lang Ping did during her tenure as head coach was broaden the perspectives of the athletes on the team, and encourage them to explore their lives outside volleyball. Didn't seem to hurt them as they won a Silver Medal in 1996 Atlanta, losing to the Cuban wrecking machine in the Gold medal match. I think you're on the right track here. Chen was one of Lang's asstants in her tenure with the national team. After Lang left Ho (sp?) Jin took over the team and returned to the older training methods with poor results. Ho was also the coach before Lang, and I think Chen was with Ho during his second tenure as well. Anyway, from what I can see, Chen handles his team more like Lang did than Ho.
