I think you're on the right track here. Chen was one of Lang's asstants in her tenure with the national team. After Lang left Ho (sp?) Jin took over the team and returned to the older training methods with poor results. Ho was also the coach before Lang, and I think Chen was with Ho during his second tenure as well.
Anyway, from what I can see, Chen handles his team more like Lang did than Ho.
