What are they doing in terms of ball control training? It's simply amazing. Almost everyball is precise, every set is quick. They're not super tall, nor talented, but they're awesome

And...I beg to differ, the Chinese are very talented. Their recognition and reaction speed are probably the best in the world, and their foot speed and lateral quickness are unmatched.

So, since we all know that they are the best passers, why aren't we sending our probable OH's and Liberos, for the '08 olympics, to the chinese clubs rather than in Italy? Wouldn't they benefit more from learning their techniques?

So when do they squeeze in time for that awesome Chinese firedrill cause that was the shhhht........ I hope I don't see other teams imitate it.

Wouldn't they benefit more from learning their techniques? The Chinese don't have a club system. Their national team trains together year round, and none of their players are allowed to go outside the country to play professionally. As one of the last bastions of Communism, the China-Beijing teams are a holdover from the Cold War era training. Look at what happened when Yao Ming spouted off after a China bball loss in pool-play. The Chinese federation was just about ready to recall his 7'1" butt back to China permanently, and cited his exposure to the NBA players as the reason for his "Uppitiness" and "new attitude". LOL.

The Japanese men used to do a toned-down version of that through most of the 90's. Don't know if they still do it. It's a shame that they are no longer amongst the top-ranked men's teams in the world, because they are very fun to watch.

What are they doing in terms of ball control training? Like Calgon, it's an ancient Chinese secret.

Like Calgon, it's an ancient Chinese secret. LOL. I think the humor of that statement is lost on many - but us old farts still remember that commercial! ;D

Never liked that commercial. It was stupid.
I heard they pass tennis balls in some practices. Also, they have to pass the ball from a ball served from the net by a guy standing on a podium.

China does pass well and I think its because they have many players who have great jump serves so they get ample practice. Not many US players have legit jumpserves, in fact pretty Logan Tom is the only one, so I guess that can be attributed to their poor passing. On another note though, the Chinese are not invincible, because if you watched their 5 game loss to Cuba at the end of pool play, they really struggled in handling the Cuban jump servers. Barros of Cuba has amazing heat on her serve as well as Charro and Echevaria.

Never liked that commercial. It was stupid. The "ancient Chinese secret" of the "Chinese laundry" in those commercial spots was a little bit hokey. However - that commercial was notable for one thing. The husband/wife team in the commercial spoke unbroken English with no accent. And there's nothing secret about the way China wins. They just train like it's a religion.

Why is China so good? How about practicing 6 probably 7 days a week 2-3 times a day, no family, no friends, no husbands, boyfriends. It's all volleyball, all the time. I spend 5-7 hours every night sleeping. I'm pretty darn good at it. China is better than me at volleyball because while I'm working on sleeping, they are playing volleyball. And when I'm awake, they are still playing volleyball.

And when I'm awake, they are still playing volleyball. Well, I'm not sure if it is still like this under their current coach. But one of the biggest things that Lang Ping did during her tenure as head coach was broaden the perspectives of the athletes on the team, and encourage them to explore their lives outside volleyball. Didn't seem to hurt them as they won a Silver Medal in 1996 Atlanta, losing to the Cuban wrecking machine in the Gold medal match.

I believe it was said by one of the commentators that one of them was married....can't remember if it was Feng or Lina....
Why are the Chinese so good? Technical perfection is in their blood. Not to sound stereotypical, but a hard work ethic is engrained in every aspect of Chinese culture. Chinese cooking? It's all about the perfect balance of ingredients. The calligraphy? Perfect upside/downside strokes, sidestrokes ...every character is a work of art. Chinese architecture? Once again, it's all about balance, architectually and visually.
So I would wager that those same principles are applied to volleyball. You can't get the quick kill without the perfect pass. It's all in the flow....like tai chi. They will not quit until they perfect their technique....I find that very admirable. The only way to beat the Chinese is to disrupt the flow with hard serves like Cuba, as forementioned in a previous post.
Another thing, those people work hard! When Hong Kong was returned to China, many Chinese migrated to Tonga, where my parents are from. My grandparent's Chinese neighbors mastered the Tongan language within a year and now speak fluent Tongan, with the glottal stops, voice fluctuations on certain vowels, etc.
And did anyone see the Closing Ceremonies....it was a BORE. I thought Greeks were fun...sheesh, my Greek friends are crazy as hell......but the short Chinese segment was awesome.... can't wait to see what they will put on in 2008.
