OK - I know UC Davis is the latest member of the Big West. Their roster seems to show players with decent height. I've been to their gym, which is rather large for what used to be a Div-II school.
Anyone know how their team might stack up against Div-I competition?

UC Davis isn't a full-fledged member of the Big West until 2006, I believe. They are just working their way into the schedules right now, I think, so they know what they'll be up against to build for.

UCSB's last regular season game is at Davis this year but it doesn't look like they play the beachless, so I guess games against Big West teams are still optional?

UC Davis plays at Long Beach on 10/9. They seem to have 11 matches against Big West teams, incl two against UCR. One of the UCR matches is at the San Francisco tournament though. I noticed that UC Davis isn't at the top of the Big West website yet. They're not even listed in the standings. It doesn't sound as if they're a full-fledged member of the Big West.

"UC Davis plays at Long Beach on 10/9. "
You're correct, I missed it the first time I checked the beachless site.

I saw Davis play once last year. They played in a good division 2 conference but were nowhere near the top of that conference. In a very good D1 conference they would, at last year's level, almost certainly be last. Things, however, change in a hurry.
Though they did not look like they were ready to move on to bigger time competition at least in volleyball. Other sports would be a completely different story I suspect.
