Pepperdine, a school many of us associate with top 10 volleyball programs, has only had a total of 4 All-American Awards. What's even more of a shocker is that it's ONLY from two players: Jamie Hill, 1999 2nd Team MB and Katie Wilkins, an OH who earned the award in 2001, 2002 as a 2nd team choice and 2003 on the first team.
Now, I can see why they have never made the Final Four... lack of a go-to player.

It is an interesting fact, but not necessarily a shocker. Pepperdine doesn't have the deep history of UCLA or Stanford or Nebraska. These teams have constantly been ranked in the top 10 since the NCAA took over women's volleyball. Pepperdine has been up and down throughout the years and really only started to make a lot of noise recently. They don't have the history that their men's program does.
Their first "Sweet 16" appearance was in 1998. They have only made it to the Elite 8 one time in 2002.
In fact, they first crack the top 10 in for one week in 1990. After that, the don't appear in the top 10 until the beginning of the 1999 season.

Actually, the Pepperdine men's program has always been the marquee. It's only been within the last 5 years or so that Nina has had some really, really good teams on the hill in Malibu.

Meaning the one who always seems to have a media guide on hand, or is tremendously adept at Internet research. Nicknames for IB aka Mr. Potato, albeit a smart russet in his own right, are too easy to come up with. I've associated Pepperdine as being a top 25 program, not top 10, so it isn't surprising to me. But for the BYU haters, it has had 23 AA awards, and has spent 116 weeks in the top 10. Not bad.

Coug, when oh when will they bring home a trophy? I'm thinking not for a loooong time. I remember going to the playoffs the year they went to the Final Four, that was the first time I went to a BYU game...loong time ago. BYU has never had deep talent in every position...it was either the middle and the RS were strong, but the outsides were not. (Thinking back to Korie Rogers on RS, Nina Puikkonen/Jackie Bundy on MB). After Korie graduated, it was Sunny Tonga and the same MB combination. New faces, same plays...and then it was worse when Ana Lena left...Karina P couldn't set the middle if her life depended on it...it was always the slide. As far as OH, I cannot think of anyone that stood out. Caroline Steuer (sp?) was overated. Same with Mari Carpenter...she was a sloooower version of Haneef. Melissa Layton brought some heat but was inconsistent. Helen Hjorth was a leaper, but nothing spectacular. Kalani Tonga? Should have stayed at the U...she was a better MB. Kim Wilson can be deadly if she adds more variety to her shots, and hits smarter. She's a better OH than any of the forementioned players. Nice armswing. April Varner....ho hum. Lindsay Metcalf....yawwwwn. Geez, didn't mean for this post to be so long....point is, I don't believe BYU has the talent to take their championship dreams farther than Parowan....hahahaha....

Trivial facts tend to be a specialty. Volleyball is the greatest sport and I love knowing all these fun facts about it. Thanks for the shoutout. Let me know when you settle on a name for me.
