Anyone know why AVP went down before and it's not doing too well now? Also is it true that Pro Beach Volleyball is declining? I know NCAA Beach is growing...
Thank you for sharing knowledge

Anyone know why AVP went down before and it's not doing too well now? Also is it true that Pro Beach Volleyball is declining? I know NCAA Beach is growing... Thank you for sharing knowledge Well, I may be in the minority here, but I don't think Pro Beach Volleyball (in the US at least, not sure about the international circuit) is currently declining- its just that it never recovered from its late 90s implosion. Its been kind of hovering at this same level ever since. The problem is that the AVP really doesn't draw the attention of casual fans, or sponsors for that matter. A lot of people who do go to tournaments do so to see A FEW specific players (or just one-aka Kerri) and that it. Unless they live and breath the sport of volleyball, people just don't care about anyone else. So it really boils down to the same issues it always is: money, viewership, and stability. Or the lack thereof. As for the NCAA, it IS growing, but in my opinion that's only half the battle. It does create a pipeline for future players (on the women's tour, men's have nothing at all) , but if the pro league continues to be weak its still going to be a huge issue. I mean lets look at indoor volleyball: its been a staple of the NCAA for years- yet good luck trying to build a domestic pro indoor league that LASTS. Beach has it better, but the truth is its pretty much impossible for most of the players on tour to actually make a living playing professional beach volleyball. At some point, you gotta figure that factor becomes a major turn off. This may also be a minor issue, but the fact that the AVP and FIVB operate separately (and have a rather frosty relationship) doesn't help things. Both leagues have their own set of rules, and even use different volleyballs. Again, may be minor, but doesn't contribute to a uniformity of the sport. Plus, having your marque player sue you- and also not sigh any contract for the 2017 season- doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Tom Burke's book, "Order on the Court", covers much of the long, tortured history of the AVP. The LA Times article from 1998 that was linked in one of the other threads is another good recource.

The person that's gonna cash in the face of the AVP is April Ross!! The only problem there is she is gonna play this AVP season with a new partner & then go off on maternity leave for the 2018 season. Then where does that leave the tour? Riding the coat tails of Sara & Kelly? We pretty much know that if the AVP & Kerri don't get a contract in place by next Thursday (cutoff for entering HB) then there will be a tour without her this year & possibly never again. I'm bummed for all involved. Also, Does anyone know if it's just Kerri that hasn't signed a contract or are there other players too?

Whatever happened to that guy? He used to be on here all the time, but I think it's been a few years since he last posted.

Hmm... examiner.com basically went under. Last post from Tom was when the Olympic teams were selected last year. Looks like he's moved on...almost like it was a pseudonym? Where did I leave my tinfoil hat?

One reason the AVP went under that is rarely discussed, because disfunction is so much more fun, is that Miller decided not to continue their sponsorship. The AVP was completely dependent on Miller both generally and at the regional stops (Milwaukee for example I think depended a lot on local Miller people).

In all honesty, no snark just genuine curiosity, does anyone think the AVP will get back to its "Golden Years" era? Or close to it?
Also, whats the deal with the NVL? Saw someone mentioned it is having some troubles itself, financially speaking?

No. I think we'll be lucky if the AVP can consistently put on 10 events per year. And there doesn't seem to be any interest in expanding beyond 24 teams in the main draw.
