LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team defeated the Liberty Flames, 3-0, in The Pyramid Friday night. Game scores were 30-20, 30-20, 30-14.
Long Beach State improved to 2-0 on the season, while Liberty fell to 0-3.
Robin Miramontes paced The Beach for the second straight night with a match-best 11 kills, to go along a career-high three aces, three digs, and two blocks. Freshman Alexis Crimes chipped in with seven kills and seven blocks, while Heather Hetzer, Jillian Mazzarella (27 assists), and Dyanne Lawlor all contributed five kills each. As a team, LBSU connected for a .380 hitting percentage (35-8-71), and out-blocked the Flames, 12.0-1.0. Heather Laudato totaled a match-high 11 digs. Jennifer Belk and Rachel VanHofwegan both netted eight kills each for Liberty in the losing effort.
LBSU controlled the tempo in the first set and got steady offensive production from Lawlor (three kills), Crimes (three kills, three blocks), and Miramontes (three kills) for the 30-20 win. Long Beach State opened up a 10-4 lead on the Flames, courtesy of a Kristin Colson ball handling error. The 49ers stretched their lead to 27-20 late in the frame after a Hetzer kill, and eventually won the set after a Lawlor kill. As a team, The Beach hit for a .286 clip (14-6-28), and registered 10 digs and 3.0 blocks. VanHofwegan paced Liberty with four kills in the frame.
Long Beach State pulled away from Liberty in the second frame with a late 10-5 run (after the score was 20-15) to close out the Flames, 30-20. Miramontes continued her hot hitting with five kills to raise her match total to eight. In fact, The Beach hit a blistering .409 (11-2-22), and limited Liberty to just a .031 clip (12-11-32). The 49ers also controlled the net, registering 7.0 total team blocks, including three more blocks from Crimes.
The Beach built a 14-5 lead in the third set, and never looked back, for the 30-14 win. Crimes recorded the last kill of the match. LBSU did not record a single hitting error in the set.
The 49ers return to action, tomorrow vs. No. 24-ranked Utah at 7:00 p.m. in The Pyramid.
Notes: Long Beach State has won 151 matches in The Pyramid since it became the home of women’s volleyball in 1994…LBSU is 28-3 vs. non-conference opponents in The Pyramid since 2001 (including NCAA playoffs)...LBSU hit .442 after game one in the match (21-2-43).
Sounds like a easy win. Hope Utah goes down easy tomorrow too.
