Q&A with AVP commissioner Donald Sun “What upsets me is when athletes specifically — and maybe some fans agree — that it’s their right, and not a privilege, to play beach volleyball. Generally speaking, beach volleyball is not profitable in the way it has been run. (World governing body) FIVB isn’t. We’re not. Whoever else is running big-time events, or another tour, is not.
Q: What has set Huntington Beach apart?
A: For the first time, we have alcohol sales to the general public which allows us to create a beer garden, and we will have our self-imposed limits and security in place. The city understands our clientele. It helps with how we design the layout and accessibility will be clean and attractive. Of course, sponsors bring whatever fun or giveaways they want. And music, of course. And live TV on Sunday gets everyone pumped up. On top of that, all the people who’ve followed the game already know the excitement of watching these gladiators duke it out every weekend.
