So twice this weekend (Fendrick/Ross and Brazil) attempted to challenge a 4 contact non-call. Both times the ref waived them off, because it was challenged more than 5 seconds after the missed touch. The problem with the rule is that the players don't know it wasn't called a touch until the 4th contact is made. They both challenged immediately after the whistle didn't blow (and the play ended by the other team's kill). I see it as they are challenging it immediately, when the 4th contact occurred. The ref disallowed it. Did anyone else notice?

Fendrick was pissed, cursing at the referee and eventually got the yellow card.

yeah I think this is an issue that has to be addressed by the FIVB. I think the whole challenge-thing is still a work in progress. Maybe they need to make more calls challengeable in the future. For example there was a situation in a men's game (Austria vs Cuba) when Doppler pushed the ball with an open hand over the net expecting a block/jaust but completely missed the block but ended up winning the point because the Ref didn't see it. And that was a set point for Cuba, so a crucial time. The play was not challengeable.
However all the challenges kinda mess up the flow of the game...

Yes I saw those situations and was also puzzled. But I think it came down to this: you can only challenge the last thing that happened and if you want to challenge something mid play you have to stop playing and request a challenge. Fendrick tried to block the ball and pop it up after the block touch, when that failed she called for a challenge. I think the situation was similar with Brazil, they tried to play the ball and when it failed they called for a challenge.

I don't pay much attention to Eurovollyball, so I hadn't heard about this silly rule. Wish I still hadn't! It sounds like a great little tool for a ref to feed a point to a team he favors, and nothing else. Hmmmm, five seconds after a touch he didn't see, so no one can say when his after-the-fact count of estimated imaginary seconds began......yeah, that makes a lot of sense in a match where real money's on the line!

It sounds like tennis. You can't return a shot you are going to then question.
If she thought it was 4 hits, you have to stop.

The problem is this situation typically happens because the 1st touch (blockers hands) is not counted. So the defending team doesn't know this until the opponent makes a 4th touch and the ref doesn't penalize them. So even if they challenge right away, from the refs point of view, they waited 3 touches to challenge. It definitely needs to be fixed.
To be honest, I don't see the whole point of the immediate challenge thing. Why not just finish the rally and then point out the issue you wish to challenge. This way, if you win the point there won't be a need to challenge and everything moves along smoother.
