UofA was able to take 2 matches off UCLA on the 1 and 2 Courts and 2 off of GCU on the 1 and 4 so Cats have improved since squaring off against GCU a few weeks ago and nice to see Arizona see a little preseason success on the higher courts.
We are not seeing the real UCLA yet, however, with 2 key player still indoor (Sponcil and Muno) and a few others who could end up in the mix as well. Sponcil is arguably the top beach player in the country so adding her to the roster will create a tough team on probably the 1 on 2 Court.
USC is beastly! They are still the front runner even considering the top players they lost through graduation.
The evolution of the sport which includes more young players training year round and beginning at younger ages translates to NCAA programs being able to pair first year athletes with juniors and seniors and get wins on key courts. NCAA programs do not need as much “development” time for athletes entering their programs thanks to high level beach clubs emerging across the country. These athletes are better prepared to compete at the highest level and hit the sand running when they get to college!

Will this be a Div. 1 team? The NCAA only has 1 division in beach volleyball. It is the National Collegiate Championships not the National Division I Championships. |
