This camp just ended this last weekend in Manhattan Beach and I thought we would pass along some thoughts:
The coaching was top notch all the way down from big names like Mario Sicoli to experienced local coaches residing nearby.
The drills were basic level for the age groups. Nothing complicated. Thought they might have been a little more challenging.
Girls were sized up on six courts, playing a version of queens, where periodically, they would count up the number of wins/losses and by that, you be sent to a higher court or lower court. This is where it got messy. Girls cutting in line, girls abandoning their place in line to match up with a better partner, girls not taking turns serving (aces earned more points) etc. Court coaches seemed oblivious to this. This portion of the camp is apparently the prime driver in whether you would rate at a1, a2, a3, etc.
It stated on the website at one time, nobody was allowed to play up. That wasn't true. There was at least one girl allowed to play above her age level. And if they are going to do this, which is fine, they should be transparent about it.
Camp did a good job attracting many of the best players in the country. In our age group 15U, I couldn't think of a top player that was absent.

Next time you drop your daughter off at this camp, you might consider just hanging out at Shellbacks for the duration.

The 2018 FIVB age definitions were used so while it may have looked like athletes were "playing up", they were actually in their correct age group for next year:
U19: 2000 or 2001 U17: 2002 or 2003 U15: 2004 or 2005 U13: 2006+

I was at Shellback on Saturday, there were definitely volley dads/moms drifting in. The coaches were around the corner at Ercoles (after the end of the tryouts, I should add. Although I wouldn't put it past a couple of them to stop in for a belt and then head back to the beach), the dingiest bar in MB. Well, downtown MB. Nothing beats The Castle on PCH for dingy - it's a dead ringer for Paddy's Pub in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

And all better than watching and deconstructing every drill at your daughter's volley camp.
