Same for the Pac-12, unless the school you're transferring from grants you a release. Amanda Gil had to sit out a year and burn her redshirt after transferring from UCLA to UW. “Burn her redshirt” and “lose a year” mean different things to me. Lose a year implies you can only be on the court for 3 seasons. Gil had the loss of one year of eligibility waived, but not the one year sit out. I believe she wasn't allowed to be on an athletic scholarship while sitting out, but the Pac-12 has since changed that. The Pac-12 process is (simplified version): 1. Under NCAA rules, the first school must provide the second school permission to contact the athlete. If not, the athlete can request a hearing to appeal the decision, heard by a committee external to the athletic department. 2. If permission to contact is granted, and the first school supports the athlete's petition to the Pac-12's Faculty Athletics Representative Council (FARC) to waive either or both of the penalties, the waiver should be granted. If the first school does not support waiving either or both of the penalties, then the athlete can request a hearing to appeal the decision, heard by a committee external to the athletic department. Ultimately UCLA did support Amanda Gil's petition to waive the loss of eligibility (possibly because Andy Banakowski had retired), but not the one-year sit-out penalty. She might have had to appeal the AD's decision to get that. Pac - 12 Conference Executive Regulations Intra - Conference Transfer RuleIn Madi Schreyer's case (softball), Stanford supported waiving both penalties and Schreyer was able to play at UW the next season, without any loss of eligibility.
