I like Kleinman on the right.
Brings up who Hugh would use for his double sub, should he continue to use it. As long as Samedy plays the back row, he won't go back to the Schau version. Could CC or Barnes fill this role? Seems iffy. Nice thing about those versions was that he didn't have to burn two subs at a go.
But, really, the move only makes sense if you have a good blocker to put in there.

If Kleinman works on her blocking, I like her for the right side also. She could be the double sub-option. The thing about subbing both setter and blocker is that you can stretch it into two services instead of just one. Nielson is a good setter but I have no idea what her floor defense is like and it would have to be good for that to work.
We could be underestimating Rendahl because she is a "walk on." It's so hard to tell. I also don't know what Buford can do because she has played so little. If one of these two can take a starting spot that would free up Morgan for the blocking sub role.
No one mentions the tight setting that seems to cause problems for our OH hitters. I know it is a product of the setter setting from behind the hitter, but it seems like something that needs to be rememdied.

If Rendahl is a walk on, I wouldn't expect her to be in the mix at all next year. She is likely a developmental player for depth. It would be a huge surprise if she were a major contributor. That's expecting a lot from a top 100 recruit and she wasn't even that. I've seen her play, however. She does have potential. But 2018 would be expecting a lot. Rubright, on the other hand, should be a big help. A 2019, unfortunately. Rubright is beyond legit. I don't like Hugh poking around the Pacific NW like he has been.

Any thoughts to backup setter. Hoping we won't have to use her, but wondering if next year's backup will be far enough ahead to take over after SSS in 2 years. I am not sure on the ability of the other setters.

I am not sure on the ability of the other setters. Nielsen is quite good and capable from the little I've seen. I have no worries about her play. I don't think McMenimen will play much, if at all.

Was just thinking...when was the last time we had a freshman defensive specialist come in and be as stable and utilized as Barnes? I'm thinking before 2010, for sure...Cowles/Tan?

Rosado was pretty good for a frosh. Barnes was very good this year, but she was never the libero. That's a whole other level.

I really like the idea of Samedy moving to the left side and putting Morgan at Opposite, but then that obviously leaves a big gap at middle. Maybe if we got a nice MB transfer that would allow the strategy to work, but I'm not holding my hopes on such a scenario. More likely, I'd be fine with sticking Rollins at OH2 assuming she adapts to the collegiate game well enough and keeping Morgan as the 2nd middle.
I'm cautiously optimistic about our defense assuming some combo of McGraw, Barnes, and Rollins are always going to be in the back row.

I'm cautiously optimistic about our defense assuming some combo of McGraw, Barnes, and Rollins are always going to be in the back row. I can't see Samedy moving over to the left. Granted they could have benefitted from more production from the L2, but you've already got a logjam on the left with Hart, Martin, McLean, Kleinman and Ziemann there, plus Rollins coming in. Samedy will almost certainly be an All American playing opposite, why take a player who has been very successful at her best position to plug a hole elsewhere? Then you presumably have two players playing out of position by moving a middle or left to the right. Not to mention that when she's opposite SSS, you automatically have a terminating option from the back row all three rotations when Sam's up front. I think progress from the left side players we already have -- or Rollins -- are better options. I've been thinking that this year's team was a little bit analogous to the 2014 team, only much more successful. The 2013 team had two All Americans, Tori Dixon and Ashley Wittman, and made the sweet sixteen, losing to Stanford 0-3. The next year, with the loss of the two All Americans, the Gophers were under .500 in conference and didn't make the tournament. Compare that to the 2016 team, which made the final four for the second consecutive year, and lost three All Americans, player of the year Sarah Wilhite plus Paige and Hannah Tapp. The 2017 version was 15-5 and third in the conference, and made it to the sweet sixteen. A much better rebuilding year than 2014, I'd say. I don't think the Gophers need a transfer. I'm thinking that Pittman, Morgan and Buford will be just fine. I hope that McGraw and Rollins are as good as advertised. It's a big step up from club to college, and despite all of the crabbing here about the Gophers' ball control, we're losing a lot of experience with the graduations of Rosado and Goehner. Regardless, the Gophers have an awful lot to build on for 2018. You've got an elite setter, opposite, and left side hitter, plus a middle with a year of experience coming back, and a highly rated libero and left coming in, as well as players like Martin, Kleinman, McLean and Morgan that have shown flashes of brilliance returning.

It seems like the consensus is that Rollins can hold her own defensively.
It would definitely be a pleasant surprise to have her as a six-rotation player/primary passer.
How's her block been? She is quite small but seems to leap well.

Also, for what it's worth, I have a lot of faith in Beckley also as a defensive specialist. I really do think we are in pretty good hands there.

She IS a good passer and defender, at least at the 17U level she was.
And she's as tall as Hart, unless her height is exaggerated. I am confident she can be a 6-rotation OH. I'm just not sure she will be that as a frosh. She certainly wants to be. That's the reason she's enrolling early, according to her.
The competition for that spot will be good, I think. And a Martin/Rollins combo would not be the worst thing to happen.
