Can someone help me better understand Hugh's coaching style? Are we seeing recruits based on his preferred style and then are not living up to his expectations? Could it be time for Hugh to run an offense based on the talent he has? I guess what I am saying is, if the blocking wasn't there last year, why didn't we run an offense that would give us more hitting power? Please, I need to understand his coaching style a lot more. First piece of advice, chill. Minny is doing very well in the national scene. The team had some young players as starters this season and they predictably had some struggles. I wouldn't be worried as the future for Minnesota volleyball is bright. Hugh's coaching style is very error averse. Most of the overarching strategy is predicated on outlasting the other team by being consistently good. Minny runs a fast offense because they 1) have the personnel to do so and 2) because it opens up more space against a bigger block. This past season, the Gophers were running more attacks out of the backrow. Not all hitters are good out of the backrow and perhaps the personnel wasn't there for the past couple seasons.

I wouldn't call them helpless, but certainly less effective. But what team isn't?
Anyhow, imo, Hugh has changed his system every year he's been here based on the personnel. I guess I really don't get what "system" it is people think he is running. Yes, he does stress low-error volleyball; but I'm not going to say that's a mistake. They are plenty aggressive when the opportunity is there; they just don't want to give away points on wild swings.
As an illustration of my point, note how he featured Wittman, Harms, Dixon, the Tapps, Santana and Wilhite in past seasons. How he used Samedy this year. I don't see any pattern other than using the talent he has.

I will add -- purely as a spectator -- that the matches against Texas, Stanford and USC the last three years looked an awful lot alike. The first two were greatly affected by sub-par matches from Rosado. She was pretty good against USC, but Goehner and Barnes were not (one of Barnes' few off matches). When they don't pass and the other team is siding out, it's an uphill battle. They were in almost every set in those 3 matches, save set 4 v. USC. But they were all hard sledding.

Wow, tough crowd here. MN has arguably one of the top 5 coaches, not just in NCAA women's volleyball but all of volleyball. His USMNT team won gold in 2008, his USWNT team won silver in 2012, and he has taken MN to the FF 2 of te last 3 years...and some of you are wondering if he's in over his head??? Let me know when you find someone with a better record in both national and international VB. Good luck with that.

I could be wrong, but I believe our errors were up this past season compared to the two seasons prior to it. To me we struggled more in serving and with the 6 rotation player concept Hugh likes.
So, what could have been different, if anything, so we can see an improvement for next season?

Please note that the 'some of you' you are referring to are not Minnesota fans and they have probably not been following Minnesota volleyball closely. Minnesota did very well this past year and I look forward to seeing what they do this year.

So, what could have been different, if anything, so we can see an improvement for next season? Well its not rocket science. Typically teams get better from year to year by having returners improve and by adding quality newcomers. Hart, Pittman, and Martin in particular look to take big steps forward in the offseason and we add in 2 potential starters in McGraw and Rollins. Pair that with some teams figuring to take a step back and you've got yourself a final four/NC contender again.

I don't think anyone was seriously ragging on the team or Hugh.
I agree with mnsports about the added errors. Chalk that up to youth. I also think 2015 and 2016 Gophs were excellent teams. Probably not fair to compare 2017 to them. 2017 was very good, at times, but not up to the level of 2015 or 2016.
I still wish Rubright was coming next year. Gophers are going to miss SSS in 2019.

It's really hard to imagine this team without SSS. I do think Nielsen will be very good for this team, I really do, but very few setters have the fluidity that Sam has. It'll just be a different look, mostly.

You're funny!
