I believe the decision to redshirt Butler was less about how much she could contribute this year and more that they wanted to save a year of eligibility since Chiaka's 5th year wasn't foreseen when Butler committed. I really doubt that Shook could have set a faster tempo offense since she struggled with the more basic high pin balls at times. I think Shook has got to give a little bit more to her teammates, not saying that she has to be a Khat Bell or Destinee Hooker, but too often she looks unresponsive. To me, Jenna Gray is a good example of a calm setter but one who also is engaged with her teammates. Shook has 3 more years so I'm sure she'll get there. "I think Shook has got to give a little bit more to her teammates" Her team mates seem to disagree with that statement. www.texassports.com/news/2017/10/30/video-no-3-volleyballs-shook-making-seamless-transition-at-texas.aspx?path=wvball

McCoy at libero was okay. Not stellar but definitely not terrible. It just seems like she didn't have great instinct on where a ball was gonna go. I'm hoping Petersen (assuming she earns the libero spot) is better at anticipating than McCoy because I feel that is the only way the libero position is better in 2018.

I am not a Texas fan but from what I have seen, McCoy will be hard to replace. Sure she is not as stellar as Hentz or White but goodness she is a fine libero. Expecting that a freshman will step in next year and be better than her will be in for a big disappointment.

Cat McCoy had been the starting Libero since her freshman season; she didn't miss many matches throughout her career. I do recall Nicole Dalton wearing the Libero jersey a time or two, so that might have been when Cat was out.
I have not seen Petersen play, but I am definitely glad to know that she is a coach's daughter. I do expect her to win the starting Libero spot in August; I just get the feeling that is exactly why she was recruited, and probably expects the same out of herself.

Years ago I thought she was getting a slow jump on the ball. Wondered if she might use a drop step to help her first step. Then I thought she was not reading the hitters well. In the end, my conclusion in part is that she and the rest of the defense is not properly positioned for reception. Mr. Elliott seems to have an aversion to the overhand dig. It's understood that the overhand dig presents a higher risk of a double touch. Is getting the setter a quiet on target ball worth the risk? It seems the teams in this years final 4 thought so. The overhand dig keeps the libero on her feet, allows her to cover more territory while keeping the team in system. Take a look at this short video featuring Kerri Walsh. This years Stanford coach Kevin Hambly also teaches the overhand dig.

First contact cannot be called a double and second contact has more to do with the player than the coach I would think.

51 minutes ago SportyBucky said: I'm going to absolutely call out recruiting and coaching as it pertains to this and upcoming years. Cupboards are thin on passers. Claire Hahn has to be the worst DS I have seen in a top college volleyball team for quite some time. Absolutely atrocious. Texas can get by with Shook's setting (albeit mediocre), but cannot get by with the DSs they currently have. Was talking to a mom whose daughter has been in the same club team as both Hahn and Rounsaville for 6+ years. I was lamenting that our DS play was..... atrocious...and why for heaven's sake won't JE pull them as they're shanking serve receives. She chuckled and said that JE loves DS'es from this local Austin club (also her daughter's club) and he's not going to change. Oh please, please let Olivia or Sydney or Jhenna be better than those two. Seriously,"a mom" from the local club? Did you ask if JE prefers the Stone's or Beatles? An expert like that should know. If you're going to quote me, get it right. I said our DSs were bad and Shook mediocre. The rest was added by someone else. If anyone disagrees with me, have at it. However, what was clear is we need better passing. No matter how good our hitting, we are neutralized by passing and the fact that Shook is not SSS, Carlini, Lloyd, Glass, etc...

Coach Mary Wise did. What a score with transfer Caroline Knop. Like some others I found myself impressed with what we saw from Olivia Zelon. Those small beach players have to be good diggers. Wish we could have seen more of her and perhaps learned of possible future intentions. Mr. Elliott might be a bit more transparent about his/our team. It really does promote the sport.

To be honest, I thought Cat peaked in her sophmore year and started slipping her junior year. What I mean is what was talked about earlier -> anticipating ball location. She was a warrior for sure, diving and sacrificing herself for the dig. But, more often, she was out of position so there was no dig possible. Wondering if players such as Zelon, who played sand, have better or "just the same" level of anticipation having to play with only 1 other teammate? I don't know, just throwing it out there for those who know more about how to compare the two.

Enough...really...Cat came into the Univeristy of Texas as the most highly recruited libero in her class. She was born in Texas...raised in Texas...and growing up wanted to play for Texas. After politely turning down over 50 D1 offers....her dream came true. She has started every regular season game wearing the black jersey. She has broken at least 3 all time Texas digs records. Cat bleeds burnt orange and considers it an honor and a privilege to represent UT. I have two daughters in their mid 20's...I know first hand the drama that goes on in college. Through it all...good days and bad...she suited up...played her heart out for her teammates and UT. Cat thank you for an outstanding career and being there for your teammates and fans. Especially the young girls who look up to you. Thank you to Jerritt, the staff and faculty, plus all the behind the scenes staff that make Texas Volleyball and the University such an outstanding Institution. Now back to The 2018 team. Hook'em

First contact cannot be called a double and second contact has more to do with the player than the coach I would think. First I want to congratulate Catherine for her Honorable Mention as an All American. Was asked "Are you talking about the first or second contact?" Both! I do believe that a double touch can be called on a first touch. Rule 14.4.3 Prolonged Contact: It is a fault when a player does not hit the ball cleanly. All exceptions including first touches allow for prolonged contact rule. 14.2.2 If my memory serves me well, this happened in the Nebraska Penn State game on Thursday. Karch commented on it. He stated that it's not commonly called and the coaches are usually OK with it as long as the referee is consistent with the call. Regardless of that, the point being that the overhand dig is being frequently and successfully utilized by the better defenses in division 1. It seems Micaya had a green light and did use the overhand. I have only one other suggestion that they may have used to improve. The overhand dig though would have been first on my wish list for this years team. It may be wise to think ahead and assess the possibilities for the 2018 team.

So, any of you worried about Elliott flying West now that USC is open?

Jerritt has been at Texas for 17 years and has undeniably built the program back up to prominence after Mick Haley left. It really wouldn't surprise me to see him at least interview for the position if USC decides to pursue him.
But he would be leaving a lot behind that he has built at Texas like the new volleyball facility, the atmosphere at Gregory gym, the current players, and the incoming recruiting classes. Plus, he might want to stay close to his 2 younger kids (assuming he and his ex-wife have joint custody and she stays in Texas) ....but who knows?
The knock on Jerritt has always been his inability to field consistent ball control teams. But he has been able to counter that by recruiting very good front row players who can take over matches. But as we have recently seen, top tier teams are able to match that and also have very elite back row players.
If he were to move to USC, it would be interesting to see if he would bring his current coaching philosophy....or would he just have access to better ball control players in CA?
Now that Texas has a new Athletic Director who is in charge of both Men's and Women's teams, I would hope Chris Del Conte would be very diligent in finding a replacement that could match Jerritt's success if he were to leave.

Coaching wise, I don’t think it’d be a smart move for Jerritt since he has such a hot flow of talent coming to Texas and he has talent lined up for years to come. 2 more years with White/Sun, then he has Fields and Logan coming in. SC doesn’t have a shortage of talent, but it’s not the same degree that’s coming through Texas right now. He also is a giant fish in a small Big 12 pond. His teams usually benefit from RPI and many times have clear paths to the Final Four. At USC, he’ll be facing better talent and better coaches which means it will be harder to host regionals and get back to the Final Four. SC also doesn’t have the fan base or support that Texas does.
All that said, Jerritt did coach at SC back in 2000, so he knows what he’s signing up for and maybe he likes LA more than Texas. Ultimately it may come down to what’s best for him and his family in regards to pay, lifestyle preference and location. Would be another wrinkle in the SC/Texas connections, which already boasts Jerritt, Mick and Ebony.
