For what it is worth, Notre Dame is ranked in the 200s in the Shanghai ARWU rankings. (So is Georgetown.) However, that mainly means they are not a research university.

What jesuit school did you attend? USC? USC was Methodist, not Catholic. The seminary moved to Claremont in the 50's USC was Godless before the 50's.

Maybe in the Midwest or the Northeast, but not in most other parts of the country. In California last year, 4 of the top 5 girls VB teams were Catholic, and 6 of the top 10. Not everybody who goes to a Catholic school is Catholic, and not every Catholic wants to go to Notre Dame.

The health issue may very well be true but whenever I read about a high profile coach resigning, I'm always suspicious. Urban Meyer resigned from Florida once due to "health concerns" and then a second time due to "family" in January 2011. Of course, none of this stopped him from taking over Ohio State less than a year later. I guess spending that short time with his family was enough for him.

You are confirming that JMAC will coach again at a jesuit school?

You can say that in any state Rich parents who can afford to send the kids to the school in the first place Rich parents who can afford to send their kids to the top clubs Private schools recruit the top players where typically public schools get what is in the neighborhood

There’s academics and there’s culture. ND may be a step below the aforementioned schools, but it’s still a quality Jesuit education. I think the point being made is that the kind of kid who commits to ND is a kid who’s bought into the entire ND experience - campus, academics, athletics, and religion. We Jesuit-educated people would never deign to be associated with Notre Dame. You know what they say, if it weren't for Knute Rockne, Notre Dame would be the University of Dayton. Boom!

Maybe in the Midwest or the Northeast, but not in most other parts of the country. There are Catholic schools in PrepVolleyball's final 2017 rankings from Arizona, California (5), Georgia, Illinois (3), Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky (2), Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri (2), Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio (3), Pennsylvania. Yeah, a lot in the midwest plus a lot in California. And some good ones in Arizona and Georgia. You could field a pretty good volleyball team only recruiting from those areas... (I'm not saying that Notre Dame should or does limit their recruiting to Catholic high schools, it's just a perk)

Meanwhile, back at Thread Topic Ranch.... JMac and his wife seem to clearly have an affinity for ND. He had great success with the USC men's program; won a Women's title at UW, and was showing signs of getting ND into a great position. Winning a title at ND would have capped an already impressive career. Back problems are the worst. (Source: ME, I've had some incidents, but not enough to give up a job, so this must be tough.) He built up a pretty passionate fan base in Seattle and created some fun memories. Here's hoping he finds a solution and then is able to do whatever he wants to do next. (P.S. That photo should be credited to the currently inactive Volleyblog Seattle website. Hope it returns soon.) (P.S. #2 Happy Father's Day to JMac and all the other VT Dads.)

You don't have to be Catholic to go to a Catholic Prep School. You don't have to be Catholic to go to Notre Dame. What's your point? You're the one who said: "Catholic schools kids make up a HUGE chunk of elite volleyball athletes." I just commented that going to a Catholic school doesn't mean a student is Catholic. Non-Catholic parents send their kids to Catholic schools because they are good schools, not because they are Catholic. The same applies to Notre Dame.
