Alright. Let's settle this once and for all. Lloyd's position as the starting setter on the NT, barring some injury or some big, abrupt and unforseen drop in performance, is pretty secure. That leaves Hancock vs Carlini. Who is better and who do you prefer, and why?

I’m not particularly fond of this thread idea but I am disappointed there isn’t a poll... which I would’ve definitely voted in.

This thread--and a poll-- will definitely settle this matter once and for all.

Hancock obviouisly has the experience but Carlini is arguably better technically and may have more potential so it's a tough choice. Not a bad option either way IMO.

What has Carlini done vs what has Hancock done. I voted Hancock based on the facts of her acheivements, not others opinions or hype.

I like Hancock. The U.S. has been successful with shorter setters. I'm not saying that will be the case with Carlini. Looking at the history of Women's volleyball, shorter setters have dominated.

Does anyone actually believe that Karch is so incompetent he won't pick who he considers will give him the best options? OK. I know the answer to that, but good gawd.
Btw, I could see him taking them both if Hancock's serve is effective enough.
Anyhow, this applies to the entire roster. Whatever you think of his coaching, I would hope people could give him that much credit.

Does anyone actually believe that Karch is so incompetent he won't pick who he considers will give him the best options? He didn’t take his best “options” to Rio in 2016. He may have picked what he believed to be his best “team” but options? He has already shown he might not do that. And that’s not solely indicative of his competency. He can be perfectly competent and still not pick his best options, that’s his job as coach, to weigh the team’s priorities. Well, I'll clarify that. For me, "best team" = "best options." This goes back to the same point I keep making. If Karch Kiraly is so incompetent (or egotistical or whatever it is people think he is) that he will take an inferior team to the Olympics in 2020, then we are already toast. People keep going on and on about his system. A HUGE part of his system, as I understand it, is proving it in the gym. I guess I just don't think things are as out of control as others do. (And I sure as hell ain't behind picking a team based on the Pan Am Cup.)

If what is being proven is how well you fit into his system, that is quite the circular argument. I don't think the argument is that Karch is incompetent in terms of his own priorities or incapable of identifying his own priorities. The argument has always been about his priorities.

Guys, let's get back to the Hancock vs Carlini topic, I'm only interested in how they compare against each other.

OK. Let's take a step back.
1) What are his priorities, as you see them? 2) What is his "system," as you see it?
I'll answer your question, however. If "his system" is how he wants them to play, then I would certainly hope that is what is being proven in the gym -- how well they play within that system.
And I'll go one step further with the alleged circular argument. Karch is our coach. He has a style of volleyball he wants his team to play (not that there isn't more to choosing a team). I would hope he is choosing the players he thinks gives him the best chance to win, given how he wants the team to play. I would hope we all do.

Guys, let's get back to the Hancock vs Carlini topic, I'm only interested in how they compare against each other. I do not see how the arguments can be separated. Furthermore, if Karch does only take two setters, the question should be who of the two would be the better backup? (Assuming Carlini -- or someone else -- doesn't supplant Lloyd.) Carlini is a better setter than Hancock. Always has been. But is that really the issue?
