I read somewhere that students at OSU hate the UofM but secretly wish they got in there lolz. I’m only half kidding The story of one our HS interns: Perfect SAT scores Every grade on his transcript was an A or A+ Started the Rocket Club at Gunn HS, one of the best public HS in the US Actually built and tested competition rockets Rejected by Cal Tech (his dream school) but Accepted by Stanford (his 2nd choice) So you didn't get into Cal Tech... at least your second choice had a better volleyball team!

When Illinois makes the final four, you all owe me $5. Poulter isn't good enough for that to be realistic. Hehe

Yup. shhhhhhhhhh went out of his way early in the season to diss Illinois and Poulter in particular. But to his/her/zhe's semi-credit, a conversion happened somewhere along the way, and shhhhhhhhhh became a believer and defender of Illinois and Poulter.

Poulter isn't good enough for that to be realistic. Who did you think was a better setter before the season? Legitimately wondering. The post was initially meant to annoy Illinois fans that I had been trolling for awhile at that point, but she wasn't a winner or a leader. She wasn't able to win the matches she wasn't supposed to, and lost matches she was supposed to win. My opinion on this topic should be well-known at this point, so I won't bore everyone again. She appeared to fortify some of these weaknesses as the season went on, but wasn't able to totally shake that monkey off her back in the Final Four, losing after going up 2-0. It also wasn't surprising. As volleyguy said at the beginning of the fifth set, "This is the big test for Poulter." Poulter is one of the most athletic, gifted, dynamic, physical, technical setters we've seen play this game... maybe ever. Unfortunately for her, however, that's not enough to be a great setter.

The biggest difference between the pre-season prognostications for Illinois and what they actually achieved was the development of Quade and the addition of Fleming. I think Poulter was Poulter, great as always; she just had more help this season.

Being a great setter is as much about technical ability as it is about match management. These are two very different skill sets. Pouter is definitely more proficient in one than the other (although I am admittedly in the minority in believing that Poulter is not as good technically as some believe.).

You know I love ya gurl, but I just don't see how this opinion jives with your thoughts on Jenna Gray. I've thought about this a lot, actually, because how I felt about Gray confused even me sometimes. She wins, so why don't I like her? What is it about her play that turns me off? Here's my answer: Stanford winning despite Gray being relatively average technically is an example of a team winning in spite of their setter. Illinois losing despite Poulter being quite above average technically (and athletically) is an example of a setter being unable to transcend her team's limitations, likely due to a variety of reasons. I think Stanford has to manage and react to Gray's level of play at times in order to win matches. I think the same of Illinois, but on the other side of the spectrum. Gray doesn't drive Stanford toward wins. She isn't the force that is propelling the team forward. I don't think she's a player whose presence alone as a leader/communicator/winner is the catalyst that makes everyone else better. Stanford has other athletes to fill those roles (like Hentz or Plummer), but because their setter is not that player is significant, IMO, and I think it has implications... like losing sets and matches to teams with much, much, much less talent... because the setter is just too important a position and touches too many balls. Contrast that with Wisconsin 2013 with Carlini, for example, and you see the opposite: a setter with the ability and the moxie to be that catalyst. Gray is a great athlete, appears to compete hard, and has improved. She has an exceptional supporting cast, including an athlete that I still believe has the potential to be the very best player in the world, if she wants to be. I'm just not a fan, despite her success statistically.

@allamerican11, curious about your thoughts on Lyndie Haddock Eppich. Did she make those around her better, or did those around her make her seem better? I personally feel she made them better.
