Ok, let's have a little bit of fun here...
A group of coaches sitting in the hospitality room of the NJCAA National Tournament earlier this week were entertaining an interesting idea - a 'volleyball lottery'.
The premise being that you'd take the top 316 recruits and then hold a lottery (like the NBA does) to determine where the recruits would play. This would spread the talent out across the country and give teams that struggled the year before a shot at competing the following year. It was also suggested that this might give everyone a better idea of who could coach and who couldn't, since the top teams would get the talent near the bottom of the pack.
Now, before people start posting comments about why this would never work or could never be done - please keep in mind the original intent of this thread, to introduce a (potentially) fresh, new topic that could be discussed in an entertaining fashion.
So, with that said, imagine a scenario where you'd hear ESPN announcers say something like this:
"Welcome to the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Draft. I'm Chris Berman, along side Stuart Scott. Let's get straight to the action..."
NCAA Commissioner: "With the first pick of the 2005 draft, Savannah State selects Cynthia Barboza!"
<< applause erupts from the crowd, sprinkled with some boos >>
Stuart Scott: "Booyah, the Lady Tigers start things off oh so nice with a s-h-o-t! Partner, this certainly has to be a big lift for their program, as well as make them an immediate contender for a National Championship."
Chris Berman: "Hold on Stuart! I agree that Cynthia will certainly boost their chances next season, but is it realistic to think that she'll single-handedly take this team from the outhouse to the penthouse in one year's time?"
Stuart Scott: "Chris, I have two words for you - Michael Jordan. She played on the US Women's National Team as a senior in high school, how tough is it going to be for her to dominate in Georgia?! Besides, as long as their coach keeps the supporting cast out of her way, how can she be denied?"
Chris Berman: "Oooh, that's pretty harsh Stuart - not saying it isn't true, but I'm more interested in how Cynthia the Barbosian will adjust to the level of play. Keep this in mind, no Independant has ever won a National Championship in any collegiate sport!"
Ok, I'm running out of creative juices, time for someone else to take this ball and run with it! ;D
