Wow! Great night for the Hawks! My first chance to see them in person this year. Some random thoughts: - Great crowd at Carver. Really fun atmosphere. - My star tonight was Brie Orr. She truly has taken the reins of the team. She was super aggressive and kept MSU's blockers guessing all night. Mixed things up well and had some really great digs, too. She is ridiculously athletic. - Molly Kelly is literally everywhere on the court! - Freshmen middles are really coming along. Jones is getting so much more confident in her attack in each match and is a very physical presence. Wing has moved into the second starting middle. My guess is a big reason is because she is a much stronger behind-the-setter hitter than Clayton which we all know Bond loves to run. It is nice to have options there for first time in awhile and gives me confidence for the future big time. - Coyle has a calm leadership about her. She came through in some big moments tonight and has a pretty killer serve. - Hoye and Louis were consistent terminators. Hoye also had some impressive back row play and also has an effective serve that just drops at the last second. Caught the MSU back row on their heels several times. We got stuck in one rotation in Set 3 that almost cost us the set (really picking on Louis on serve) but was impressed they worked their way out of it. I would love to see Louis add a well-disguised roll shot to her aresenal just to mix things up a bit. Louis blocked really well tonight. - Slagle is just a gamer. So confident and really solid. I predict she is our future libero. - Lastly, there is just an observable positive team chemistry, both on the court and on the sidelines. Genuine enthusiasm from the Bench Press when their teammates do well! I was interested to see how Hughes looked because cannot be easy to go from one of the stars of the show at ASU to not seeing the floor a great deal. Was really impressed. And WOW, she has hops! Fun to watch her in warmups. I see her playing a key role for us over the next couple of years.
As for MSU, they have some work to do. I realize they are piecing things together basically from scratch so cannot be easy. There is definitely a lot of talent on the floor in green and white. Was pretty obvious to me that their pre-conference schedule caught up with them tonight. Chronowski is a helluva hitter.
OK, that's all, folks! Let's bring it on Sunday against the Wolverines! Congrats, HAWKS!!

Don’t think anyone said it was, but it’s still a good win for a bunch of underclassmen. This is what happens when you play nobody in preseason and start the B1G conference play and that is your toughest match to date. Michigan St. and Alabama took the same path except Alabama played Purdue at the end of preseason and got thumped. I call this a thumping. MSU can end up with a respectable aggregate RPI despite not playing any team in the non conference that will make the tournament, not having a single non conference RPI top 100 win, and snatching wins against big 10 teams that won’t be making the tournament either. Assuming they don’t get wins against the top half of the big 10, nitty gritty won’t like MSU at all, but aggregate RPI could have them as a tournament bubble team.

I'm *really* throwing down tonight knowing MSU is a bubble team. Hawks have a chance.

Good win Iowa! I was actually expecting a win, but maybe not quite so emphatic. MSU goes through passages of quite poor play when I've watched them. They are going to have a really hard time in the B1G this year. I would pick Iowa to end up above them right now.

The result isn't surprising to me. Iowa has more coming back that MSU, so I am not surprised the Hawkeyes were able to take care of business at home against a team maybe facing their best opponent of the season (depending on how Tennessee is doing, although the Lady Vols got a nice win tonight).

Good game and good win, Hawkeyes! I think this is the year for Iowa to make some noise and make it to the tournament!

Michigan St. and Alabama took the same path except Alabama played Purdue at the end of preseason and got thumped. I call this a thumping. I don't disagree that MSU scheduled light, but the idea that playing a tougher schedule would've prepared a group of 4-5 freshmen and 3-4 sophomores, only one of which saw any significant playing time last season, to win their B1G opener doesn't make any sense. Getting your ass kicked for four straight weeks doesn't prepare you to, all-of-a-sudden, start winning in the fifth week. This team has no idea what they're doing and will need time to figure that out. The lighter schedule allowed them the freedom to make mistakes without tacking L after L onto their record while still allowing the possibility of a tournament berth despite the B1G gauntlet, and I think that was a good choice. Also, the lineup really didn't help. The 6-2/dub sub thing eliminated Gros on the slide, an important part of their offense to date, put Midgette and Swartz on the floor, two athletes that are not B1G-caliber players, and kept McLean on the bench/in a reduced role because of subs, a player who's been very good in right back and in SR. Norris and Midgette need to transfer to the MAC, Cox needs to take a seat, and Haggerty needs to pass/defend well enough so they don't have to set her.

I don’t understand how the 6-2 operated for MSU. Shklyar only had 4 assists all night. Really hoping they go back to the 5-1.

Does the Big Ten have "travel partners" in WVB?
I follow the MVC, where they play full double-round-robin (every team playing every other team home and away), mostly in Friday and Saturday matches, each team has a "travel partner" who is usually the team that is closest geographically (or one of the closest). For instance, UNI and Drake are travel partners, as are Illinois State and Bradley. So on one Friday, ISU might play at UNI while Bradley plays at Drake, then the next night, Bradley will be at UNI with ISU at Drake.
But with the Big Ten not doing a full double round, and not playing on back-to-back nights, I didn't know if they used the travel partner system or not.
