I can't remember, but didn't Kanoe Kamana'o become the freshman of the year last season? Was it a real award or just because she was the only freshman making the all american list? Anyone knows if they have gone back to giving that award this year?

Anyone knows if they have gone back to giving that award this year? I think it is an annual award. Kim Glass won it in 2002. I think Pavan (Nebraska) wins it followed by Morrison (Washington). In the next tier I would put Muratore (Santa Clara), Crimes (LBSU), Pressey (California), Stalls (Nebraska) and Kehoe (Stanford) for starters.

Yes - there will be a FOY this season.
However - the AA thing isn't the overriding consideration. You're limited to 12 players on each all-region team, and the AA selection pool must come from the all-region teams. Many years, there are more than 12 players in the Pacific Region who are worthy of AA selection. Often a region's FOY selection is in a stacked region and doesn't make her own all-region team.
FOY must come from one of the 8 regional FOY selections. Even if there are several worthy FOY candidates in one region, only the one who ends up as regional FOY can be considered for national FOY. Last season, once Kristin Richards got the Pacific Regional FOY, Courtney Thompson or Sam Carter couldn't be considered for national FOY.
Of course I assume you're talking about the AVCA awards.

She hasn't put up the numbers which I think merit serious consideration for these awards. Granted - she's an important part of her team, but I'm being realistic.

i like the freshman for USC and Tara Hittle of UH, now do they base it also on how far a team goes in the tourney and their contributions in the tourney?

Each Div I school can nominate someone for FOY. Hittle was named the WAC FOY, so she is definitely in contention. First she would have to be named the Western Region FOY, which includes the Big West, the WAC and the Mountain West conferences. The National POY must be selected from the list of the regional POYs. The regional FOYs are chosen after the first two rounds and announced Dec. 8. Videos of the regional FOYs must be received by AVCA by Dec. 9. The national FOY is announced Dec. 15, after completion of the regionals. This is what the AVCA says about it: "Candidates for Region Freshman of the Year must be true freshman. Only one nominee per school is allowed per year. The National Freshman of the Year will be selected from the eight Region Freshmen of the Year award winners and must submit a 3-minute highlight tape to the AVCA in order to be eligible. The video stipulations are as follows: 1st general footage from television is suggested, views from any angles, and whole play not required. However, if the candidate is also being considered for the All-America team and has sent in an AA video, than that video will be used for both National Freshman of the Year as well as for the All-America selection." You can get more information from the AVCA site: www.avca.org/collegiate/DIawards/DIawardsindex.aspI think that Pavan is the clear front-runner, followed by Morrison.

I understand that Pavan deserves the FOY award, but I've got to mention Bryn Kehoe for Stanford. I don't think she's received the attention for what she has accomplished this year. She has been the starting and main setter for the entire season. Katie G. only set a few rotations for only a part of the season. Bryn has been solid on setting and defense and has taken a somewhat young team a lot farther than most of us expected.

I mentioned her, but did not go into detail as to any that I put on my original list: "on 11/28/04 at 12:57pm, publius wrote: I think it is an annual award. Kim Glass won it in 2002. Unfortunately, Morrison, Muratore, Pressey and Kehoe are all in the Pacific Region, and only one of them can go forward from there.

I wouldn't put Tara Hittle in this category either because she had a few good matches, but in the past month or so she has been struggling a bit. Even getting hanked from the line-up on several occasions. Tara Hittle is going to be a star for the Wahine, but I don't think that will earn her freshman of the years honors this season. She has been a little inconsistent.
