The Gophers are tied for 5th in the conference of 14 teams with an entirely new coaching staff. Reading this thread you’d think they were 0-150 on the season and Taylor Landfair doesn’t know how to walk. I’d like to highlight, underline, star and bold this please. They’re doing pretttttty good for completely relearning a new system under a new coaching staff… especially when half of the team didn’t even start to practice together until August.

I don't share the sentiment that adding the 4 West Coast schools to the B1G is going to change recruiting in a negative way.
1. These 4 schools have always recruited very well, 3 of them have National Titles this century. 2. The scholarship totals don't change.
In my eyes, the addition of these teams is just going to make West Coast kids more likely to pick Midwestern schools since they can play some matches closer to home every year. The Midwestern schools have overall better volleyball cultures with raucous arenas and big TV ratings which will absolutely be a draw to people who are OK with wearing jackets and snow boots for a few years.
There is plenty of talent to go around and the B1G volleyball brand is just going to get bigger without the Pac.

While I hear what you're saying and agree to some extent, they're only 2 games above .500 and are in danger of not making the tourney. The fact that they're 5th in the B1G doesn't mean much this year with weaker than normal teams. We have the reigning B1G player of the year and B1G defensive player of the year, and a coach while new is still very good, you can see why expectations were still high. There are also teams out there with new coaches that are over performing and I'm assuming they have the same challenges of learning new systems and such. It just hasn't clicked for this team yet for some reason so I think that's been disappointing. But yes, they're doing ok other than that weekend out east. Cook says give him another season or two so let's wait and see! I do think he'll be able to get us back to where we hope to be.

It is all based on the lost Maryland/Rutgers weekend. Beat Rutgers (and they should have) the conversation is a lot different.

All the signs pointed to a great season and I had expectations that they would be one of those over performing teams with a new coach (much like Penn State last season) but unfortunately that hasn't happened. Some of the negative talking on here though is way over the top to me. Getting a new coach is inevitably unpredictable, it could go really well and click right away, it could go not so well and tank or it could take a while to adjust and get back to a comfortable level of play. I'm more inclined to think that it's the third option. One of the big reasons I think they'll get back on track is how he was able to keep the Swenson sisters on board for '24 and his new '25 recruiting class is actually pretty impressive. And not only have they committed to the program but they're excited to be Gophers, that excitement makes me excited.

Ya I understand that as well. All the signs pointed to a great season and I had expectations that they would be one of those over performing teams with a new coach… I think a lot of us (self included) ignored any signs that pointed to potential problems. - There were questions about the middle offense players. - There were issues last year with a connection between our setter and middles not named ‘Booth.’ (more than half the total attacks from the middle were by Carter). - There were questions about our back row defense and serve receive, even after we got Kylie and Z.

I think we were confident that Mel and the B1G POY would continue to connect, and that Mel/Wookie’s connection would continue. As for the opposite, once we knew that Lydia was coming, the general consensus (I think) was that since she had had to hit anything from anywhere in 2022, there wouldn’t be problems at opposite.

The OSU failures this year bring up an interesting topic of conversation.
OSU fans don’t seem to be panicking like MN fans. What is the difference?
Is it the fact that they don’t have a new coach? Or that they have a top recruiting class coming in next year? Or is it simply that us MN fans had too high of expectations for this year?
Personally, I find it a bit concerning that our top players have not been just that. Top players. Watching Londot last night and she is still Londot. What happened over the spring and summer? Injuries? Learning a new system? Playing with a brand new roster beginning in August?
Will be interesting to see this team in 2024!

For OSU it was an expected rebuilding year with them graduating many key players. This was not an expected rebuilding year for the Gophers with mostly upperclassmen returning or transferring in. Our returning top player has not had the season we were expecting and our passing woes have been magnified by players filling a bigger role than they maybe were ready for. I think the small things have added up and we haven't been able to fix them quickly enough for probably many reasons. Add in a new system, tempo, coaching staff and players and I guess it just all added up.🤷♀️ That's just my take on it.

any thoughts on which 2026 recruits the goph’s will recruit? I'm just regurgitating what someone said over on the Gophers 2024 thread, but Elena Hoecke (Maple Grove, MN) was mentioned. I did a brief search and Prep Dig had her listed as the #1 recruit for the state of MN. She's a 6'3 MB

She would be a big get considering she’s from Texas and Texas also has eyes on her.
