Again, this staff keeps killing it on the recruiting trail, but at their own pace. Another reminder to be patient, volleytalkers. Kristan Kelsay is a exceptional recruiter.

So what positions do we still need filled for 2026? I think MB will be most likely the next target/announcement. Maybe a DS/L but that’s not a priority in this class.

So what positions do we still need filled for 2026? Here’s the 2026 roster so far. Seniors/Redshirt Seniors: Calissa (M), Zeynep (L/DS), Kate (L/DS), Chloe (S) Juniors/Redshirt Juniors: Stella (S), Olivia (OH/Opp), Sydney (OH/Opp), Alex (OH) Sophomores: Jordan (M), Mckenna (L/DS), Carly (Opp), Kelly (OH) Freshmen: Elena (M), Makenna (OH) So 2 setters, 3 liberos, 3 middles, and 6 pins. —All of those pins will have eligibility in 2027, so I think another 2026 pin would be least likely especially if they have their eyes on a 2027 pin (might be hard to bring in a 2027 pin with 7 players ahead of them). If the scholarship limit is sure to increase by 2026, maybe another pin? —Setter feels unlikely considering who we hope to see become a Gopher in 2027. Remind me - who do we hope to see become a Gopher in 2027?

Ellery DeBoer, a 5’11” setter on Elena Hoecke’s 16-1s team and from Willmar HS (where Sydney Schnichels went to HS) gets mentioned a lot and for good reason. Prepdig has her as the #1 overall 2027 prospect in the state as of February. Another local that was at the elite prospect camp was Cora Bicknese. L/DS who played up with Vital 16-1 and is from Chatfield in SE MN. My high school would scrimmage or play them in non-conference. I remember they usually had scrappy, gritty teams. Gopher mascot too. #3 overall in MN according to prepdig.

Could be a nice utility player should Minnesota ever transition to a 6-2. As for the greater region, that Legacy 15's team is going to get raided, and early. Non-volleyball reasons notwithstanding, the Michigan schools are going to have to show a lot of upward momentum this season to keep those players home - them failing to do that could benefit Minnesota recruiting. If Keegan is really smart, he'll skip on recruiting the true heir apparent to Swenson in 2027 and backfill practice setters in the portal until 2028 to land a real setting prize close to home...Josalyn Samuels. And if he doesn't end up getting her, try to poach a 2027 from wherever they committed.

what are thoughts about Elleora Utecht from northern lights 15-1? she seems to be their primary attacker and pretty good passing

Shes very good all things considered, but among setters for that elite tier of college recruiting, I don’t think she’s as good as Deboer.

Everyone has been talking about DeBoer in 2027. Kaelyn Bjorklund. 6’1” setter/opp for Northern Lights 15-1 this past season. I believe someone has mentioned before that Northern Lights runs 6-2s a lot to get more kids playing time. Looks like she started in a 6-2 with Lakeville South varsity as a freshman this year too. It does seem like there are more Gopher VT posters with ties to/knowledge about MN Select than Northern Lights. NL girls seem to get mentioned less frequently. Rayna Christianson was at the elite prospect camp though and is a Creighton commit. KBB liked what she saw!

Bjorklund was moved ahead of DeBoer on PrepDig's list earlier this summer. I remember a poster commenting that they do things like that (flip rankings that seems a bit out of left field) to garner more hits or something.
From what I've observed, DeBoer appears the more true setter, better hands, better tempo on offense. It sort of feels like discussing Shaffmaster vs Stella Swenson...taller/more offensive and perhaps better all-around volleyball player, vs the player who likely "sets" better. I'm a fan of picking up the latter. Case in point: SSS was exceptional at setting from day one and was a major factor in the enormous single-year turnaround in results for the Gophers from '14 to '15. Shaffmaster has certainly built upon her already good vball fundamentals, but I've watched every gopher match in the last fifteen years and I can't really say that about her setting capabilities? Maybe a bit better connecting with middles? But sadly not nearly enough for what one would hope after four seasons starting in the B1G.
But now I'm intrigued by Josalyn Samuels...

(Who I think MN will go after hard) I think they were *maybe* suggesting that they would prioritize going for a big time 2028 setter (such as Josalyn Samuels) instead of DeBoer in 2027 and pick up a utility/backup setter for 2027. It’s an interesting thought.
