Okay just saw those brackets and i gotta say it. Apple Valley? Apple… Valley? At state? And that’s not a typo? Thats funny because in my head I still live in the days of Apple Valley crushing and Roseville being a cellar dweller 😂

2025 commits Mckenna Garr and Carly Gilk and 2026 commit Elena Hoecke were named to Star Tribune's All-Minnesota Team of 25 players across the state. Interesting to see where everyone is committed. I had to do a double-take about Annika Swenson thinking I missed there being a 5th Swenson sister lol. But she's at Lakeville North not Wayzata. www.startribune.com/meet-the-2024-minnesota-star-tribune-all-minnesota-girls-volleyball-team/601174869They also did a separate article on Carly being named their high school player of the year. Not super in-depth but a few good quotes from her. I was able to see both of these articles without a Star Tribune subscription, but if you can't see it, her coach shouts out her defensive effort (+ she has more digs than the libero), she had to learn to give herself some grace after feeling some pressure after committing to the Gophers, and apparently she initially thought she wanted to go out of state for school citing an itch to travel. I'm glad the then-brand new MN coaching staff was able to convince her otherwise! Heck of an arm and really seems to have grit and fight in her. If you haven't watched the match I posted recently, watch the beginning of the first set. I think Champlin Park was down 4-10 and she sends over a freeball kill on a scramble play. It honestly looked like she was going for a kill and not trying to send over an easy freeball. Love that mentality even while down 5+ points. And she really did turn her game around pretty well being down 0-2 with Maple Grove's student section roasting her all night. They weren't giving her grace, but she held it together. Getting her ready for some of the more rowdy B1G student sections lol www.startribune.com/champlin-parks-named-star-tribunes-all-minnesota-girls-volleyball-player-of-the-year/601174867

Gopher fans aren’t going to like hearing this but I’ve seen a lot of Gilk in both Club and HS and I just don’t think she’s a dynamic enough hitter to be a starting opposite for the Gophers unless she were to transformationally develop her hitting mechanics. Contact point, power, and step close explosiveness leave lots to be desired. Reminds me a little bit of Crowl minus the height but better in the athleticism department.
Similar to the sentiments you may have heard about Schnichels coming out of high school. Although, to Gilk’s credit, her all around game is notably quite a bit better compared to 18 year old Schnichels.
I’m not saying I don’t see a role for Gilk with the Gophers but as of now I couldn’t honestly say that without some major improvements I could see her being Plan A on the right pin. At least for a good while. I hope I’m wrong.

Eva Swenson class of 2026 with a four ranking has not committed yet. I wonder if the gophers have a scholarship for her.

Across the river you don't mean, you can't mean the dreaded (dare I say it) (choke) Wisconsin.

Although I'm a gopher fan I hope she goes to St Thomas. I do cheer for them.

Admittedly I don't get to see her play in person a lot but based on the clips I have seen, she has a lot of shot selections and way heavier arm swings than Crowl and Schnichels. And we are not even talking about her ability to be effective on the left and her passing. She is a very well rounded player. Now I am curious to see if Cook will try to get a more experienced RS from the portal and how ready Gilk will be for the B1G. I still think that she will get plenty of opportunity to play and develop.
