I guess no big surprise, 5:00 PM for Ga Tech and 7:00 PM for UCSB.
UCSB's 1st round opponent, Alabama A&M is ranked #217 by Pablo and they haven't played a Top 100 team since 9/3. Overall they are 22-5 but they have losses to #251 and #256. It looks like a pretty easy draw, but we should never take ANY opponent for granted. They have nothing to lose and this is rally scoring.

Why do I dread the 1st game of any match when the Gauchos are playing?

Here is what you can expect from Alabama A&M. They'll be scrappy and athletic, so don't look over their roster and be deceived by their size (or lack thereof). They won't play the type of volleyball that you're used to in the Big West (or in California for that matter). The match has the potential to be 'ugly', so remain disciplined. Show them the way it's supposed to be done and it should be over quickly. Play sloppy or to their level and it could be a long night. I'm confident that you'll be fine, so don't worry - be happy!

Kathy's initial comments (from the UCSB website.)
"After last year, we were prepared to go out-of-state. Compared to some of the other teams from California, I think we got a pretty fair draw; I think we were rewarded for winning the Big West [Conference] with the No. 13 seed," Santa Barbara head coach Kathy Gregory said. "I don't know much about Alabama A&M, but I do know that both Georgia and Georgia Tech had some quality wins and it will be a tough place to play."

Note to Kathy:Prepare for Georgia Tech. The speed at which they run their offense is something that most teams aren't accustomed to if they don't see it a couple of times a year (like those in the ACC). Ask the Wahine Faithful what it was like to see it first-hand last year. If they're honest they'll tell you that if they didn't have Kim and Lily that they might not have come out of that match with a 'W' and advanced to the Final Four. Now, I don't mean to sound like I'm discounting Georgia's chances, but preparing for them wouldn't be much different then preparing for a team from the middle of the pack in the Big West. Good luck Gauchos!

UCSB is in trouble.

It's not the same GT! They don't have Eveland. They don't have Preiss.
UCSB's biggest problem is that it's at GT.
(The ACC was very mediocre this year.)

Leband has done a nice job taking the reigns from Eveland and has really come into her own running Bond's offense. If you throw in Gergen, Kuhn and their libero Aston (4.48 dpg) - I think Georgia Tech is a team I'd prepare for if I were Kathy.

Well, see that's the problem I have with GT. They lost every match they had against top level non-ACC teams this year. This "roll" they are on, including that of Leband, was in the ACC.
And then they were one and out in the ACC tournament.
You could be right, don't get me wrong. I just don't think we know for sure if they are anywhere near last year's team. What data we have says they are not.

Oh I hear ya...and am not proclaiming a march to the Sweet Sixteen as inevitable. I'm merely suggesting that Kathy (like she reads this site or would even listen to me) prepare for the Yellow Jackets more than the other opponents. I think UCSB is the team that comes out of this mini-bracket, but it should (could) be a good match with GT. Anyway, we'll have to wait and see - won't we?

Having gone to many an NCAA first and second round Gaucho match, I would never, ever take either of those games for granted. I think the Gauchos have great potential this post-season, but it's important that they focus on each game as an entity in itself, not as a means to an end.
I think our draw was pretty good, actually, but I'm sad I won't be able to go to any games in SB.
