I read these threads and I feel like it's the movie Groundhog Day. *sigh* (I'll be fine) The Groundhog Day actually refers to the usual commentary about how these other teams are losing x and y player and because of that the Badgers will be better because they have most of the parts. But those teams with x and y player always seem to land some miracle transfer. I'm not hoping for a transfer, because we don't need one, but I am frustrated with that process. It becomes an interesting issue. And, your post has inspired bit of a rant (Fair warning). I always would advocate for freer player movement. If you or I can transfer to a new school without any issue, I don't see why players can't. But, I am torn as a fan of the sport because it has grown increasingly bothersome to me the last 10-15 years that there is so much top-heaviness in volleyball. Women's sports in general, but we're talking volleyball here. It's the same 3 or 4 schools year after year after year. Which I am sure is great for fans of those schools. But, if I were to ever walk away from college volleyball it would be due to my being bored with watching the same thing every year. It's like watching the Hallmark Channel at Christmas. I have seen this movie under a different title before. Fans like cheering for a winner, but it's hard for teams not named PSU, Nebraska, Stanford, etc. to grow fan bases if they're getting their hides tanned and have absolutely no chance of competing for championships of any stripe. This is the Wisconsin board, so some probably know the answer, what was attendance like at the Field House in 2012? Probably not good. Why? Because they weren't any good. Everyone likes cheering for a winner. You have to be a volleyball die-hard to become a regular at half of the B1G, half of the PAC, and about 95% of other conferences. Part of what makes the NCAA men's basketball tournament so fantastic is that upsets happen. The 64th best team in the tournament in UMBC can beat #1 Virginia. Lehigh can (and has) beat Duke. But, in volleyball Howard could try a million times and never come close to beating PSU. As the talent depth expands, we seem to actually see see greater talent consolidation. Gone are the days of Hawaii, Long Beach, Pacific, etc. competing for Final Fours & Championships. All of the transfers that schools like Nebraska get just exacerbates the problem. The Sun transfer was a bit different, in that it was from one of the top programs to another. But, it's hard for the middle or lower tier programs to be building up your program only to have Nebraska swoop in and take your best player. And, I don't mean for this as a shot against Nebraska, they're just an easy and convenient example because they do it often. It's Cook's job to field a winner, afterall. But, we all want the game to grow. And it is, slowly. But, this sport would be so much better with more participation. I know plenty of people who became volleyball fans not by playing it or having children playing it. But, because they went when the team got to be pretty good and fell in love with it. OK, rant over. Continue on with your Badgers chatter.

Continue on with your Badgers chatter. :D I should distinguish between my opinion on transfers, and the good teams getting transfers. I agree on player movement. It's more about - why does Nebraska always benefit from the player movement?? Attendance from 2008-2012 was good. It was still in the top 5 and has never dipped below that. Sure, it was lower than 2004-2007, but average attendance was still around 3,500. I know, because I was there. It is true, I fell in love with the Badgers in 2000, and more in 2006, because they were good. But like the long-suffering fan I am of a baseball team with the initials PP, I stuck with it. Volleyball will become mainstream when someone finally no longer asks, upon hearing I was traveling to vb, or had season tickets to vb: "oh, did you play?" That's when we know it's mainstream. I just went to Badger hockey last week. Nobody ever asks me if I played hockey (no).

Another question when asked at away matches: "Are you connected to one of the players?"

Another question when asked at away matches: "Are you connected to one of the players?" Surprisingly, it's parents that ask that. They should know better, just by looking in the stands at home!

Because Coach Cook sacrifices integrity and pushes players out when they don't fit the program's needs, opening up scholarships. I believe the NCAA has addressed that, however, with the 4 year scholarship rule.

I think thats one reason why people follow teams, but there are other ways. I started watching NCAA womens volleyball this offseason because there were uploads on youtube. The best way to grow your fanbase is: already be in the geographic area OR make it easy to follow them. Right now the easiest teams to follow are in the SEC and ACC because you can follow their matches through the ESPN app. I started following nebraska because their matches were available to me on youtube when I first started watching NCAA womens volleyball. I think the best way to grow the fanbase is to make the matches available to a wide audience. Right now there are too many conference specific networks you have to subscribe too if you want to watch all the games, and volleyball does not have the luxury of already being incredibly popular like Football/Basketball. I bet you could find a ton of cubs/braves fans across the country because tnt/tbs aired their games all the time in the 90s.

IMO there’s no reason why Wisconsin shouldn’t be a Top 4 team and make the Final 4 next year LMAO!!!!

To steer away from the trolling, as a reminder, three Badger futures are playing this Friday.
Courtney Gorum and Anna MacDonald will be playing for Team East, and Izzy Ashburn took a long trip from the suburbs to play for Team West. 7 players will represent the Big Ten for Team East and five for Team West.
