I know it was only a scrimmage but I was actually surprised with the passing of the team. You could see clear improvements from Micaya, Logan, and even Sydney. I saw one point where Hahn got horribly aced and came back the next point with a perfect 3 pass. That's the kind of resilience this team has been missing. I don't want to read into it too much as maybe the serving wasn't that tough but am curious to get everyone's thoughts. It's clear that we need a lot of work in the transition game. There were too many times when they would get a good up and the team wasn't able to capitalize. I think a lot of it was a location thing, too many people in the right side of the court, which creates additional uncertainty. It's clear that Fields is going to be amazing. If she has a great season, I don't see how she isn't in the running for NFOY. I'm sure Kipp will also be in the running. Back here with an edit because I forgot to add how much I love Phillips as a player. You can just tell that she belongs on the court. I really really hope she finds a way because you can tell that she's a player and is someone who's bought in. I really really really hope Shook works out for the team. I think the better the passing is, the better Shook can/will perform. I don't think she's that great on the run which is why the passing really needs to be more consistent. I would also hope that her losing the starting spot has lit a fire under her to get after it. I still think (in the long-term) that she provides the team with the best opportunity to be a championship-caliber team. I'm hoping the improvement from Logan in the back row will allow for a better competition between Hahn and Rounsville for the other DS position. I think that would elevate the level of play from everyone. The first few weeks of the season are going to be a gauntlet but I'm hoping they come out with 1 loss (Stanford). Hook 'Em! I agree, 1 lost to Stanford in a 5 set match

It will be interesting to see how Skylar develops but she presents as an option for outside as well. Not sure where she’s at in her all around game, but I do hope she gets opportunities to play all the way around as that can open up another attack option and would be good for her personally as she moves forward in her vball career. Really hope Jerrit focuses more on developing an all around game for all the players then he has in his past.

This will be interesting with both Madison Williams and Melanie Parra coming in next year. I think Parra has the technique to find her way on the court in an Amy Neal-esque style. She already has the international experience and could add a level of stability for the backrow. I'm really hoping the blocking improves this season. Seeing Butler and Fields next to one another in the front row has to be tough for opposing teams. If they can improve the serve game, they should be able to lock down the block.

With Parra and Williams coming in, I would love to see more of an international style of play. Meaning, less usage of the DS' with the exception of Williams/Parra. Parra playing defense for Williams and attacking out of backrow. I think Logan and Skylar playing backrow will be steady passers and add an extra layer of offense to the system. Also, with Jenna, Shook and Naomi all in the mix, I'd love to see some double subs with either ONeal for the bigger block and slide or Phillips for the block and her ability to attack anywhere (I say either or because of who wins out the 2nd MB position). Let these DS' Hahn and Rounsaville graduate out and use the subs sparingly for lower competition or when struggling.

Seems like some folks want three 6-rotation pin hitters to be in the lineup; that just isn't feasible. There's a reason why programs have defensive specialists on their roster.
And, based on how many substitutions are permitted, unless the front-row player is better on defense or serve receive in the back row than your DS, not sure the value is there. Serving and back-row attacking for sure need to be considered.
And, yes, it's great to have front-row players striving to get better with their back row play, and gaining that experience in actual matches is important.
But, winning the match with the personnel who give you the best chance to win the match is still the objective.

DSing both Logan and Skylar leaves 2 hitters on the floor and one is a middle that can only be utilized in-system. Texas is lucky because Micaya generally does a great job when she is routinely the only attack option. The setter is also stressed when there is only one attack option as well. Most teams will DS either the outside or right side, but usually not both. If Logan is really struggling passing, then get her a DS and have Skylar play 6 rotations.

In the past, Elliot tries this strategy in the beginning of the season in which the right side has a DS or OH has a DS but sometimes it just doesn't work. During our 2012 championship run, it worked when Shadare was a 6 rotation outside and Eckerman being in the back as well. I don't understand why Elliot doesn't try this once more? Not ready? I don't know. We just need hitter to be DS'ed out, especially when those DS don't the best job in passing and it all goes to the outside 70% of the time.

Considering Logan graduated high school one year early, was obviously not at Texas for Spring 2018, and only attended one summer session, she did a great job for being thrown to the wolves early as a 17-year old. Yaazie nor Luketic was ever gonna play 6 rotations, so we played the only option we had last year early on prior to settling back on having a DS come in for Logan. Folks have short memories, it seems.

Ebony would of been great 6 rotations but not sure of her back issues. However she’s playing opposite for her club team and obviously playing all the way around.

Because she cannot and any thought that she could is absolutely silly. She can't defend the floor when she's front row. She couldn't pass. If she could, she would have. What idiocy.

Yaazie, in her 4 years at Texas, learned how to play Opposite and Middle Blocker as she had only played OH prior to college; there aren't many college players who ended up being a starter at every front row position. She worked very hard on her fitness and conditioning, as well, as she did not arrive at Texas in the best physical shape. I'd say she developed very well. Expecting her to also fluorish in the back row is asking a lot based on all she provided in the front row.
Sounds like you are just wanting to find something to complain about . . .
