I have a weird hunch, and I'm probably, definitely wrong, but with the news of Miyabe coming in.... I could see either Miyabe or Rollins playing back row only (still giving us another outlet hitting option). Other one plays six rotations and still passes. Barnes moves to L (finally). Then, since we are now running out of room for a transfer setter to come in, McGraw starts setting again (or at least challenges for a setting position). We then have a quick, scrappy setter with reasonable height and fantastic defense. She does have good hands and location... 😛😛😛 Omg haha

How would eligibility work in Miyabe's case? She is listed as a sophomore for the 18-19 school year. So only two years remaining, correct? Unless there is some loophole for JUCO transfers that I am not aware of. Curious to see where she fits in as far as playing time goes. Wouldn't she have to pass the TOEFL and meet all those requirements as well? It seems strange she was referring to transferring to Minnesota as early as an October 2017 article.

Sara Nielsen is very good. Excellent decision maker, excellent hands and location. Good size. Not as quick or flexible as SSS to make any set from anywhere, but literally no non-pro is. I think you are good enough at setter. The Gophers managed to overcome the talent of SSS to lose to Oregon, so there must be something more important to solve.

JUCO grads have to meet GPA requirements and have their AA degrees. TOEFL's are not required I don't believe.

Oregon was specifically tough for Minnesota. Some teams just have trouble with a certain team. Oregon best them twice this year and then was swept by Nebraska who was swept by Minnesota. Certain matchups in matches can make upsets happen. Oregon is a very talented team, and when they are on, they are very tough to stop. The reason Oregon beat Minnesota was because they passed very well. Oregon’s setter is unique and makes very athletically impressive sets. She got her hitter a lot of 1 on 1s and had 10 kills herself. Oregon’s offense is also very unique as each hitter hits at least 3 different balls consistently.

I noticed in warm-ups for the tournament (thinking about next year too soon, I was) that Sara Nielson's hands were up higher over the net than SSS when doing block jumps. I don't think defense will suffer at all. The transfers out there do not sound any better than Nielson - but I am not familiar with their play myself. Its hard to beat two years of practice with the hitters.
As far as Airi Miyabe goes, McCutcheon doesn't announce foreign recruits until all of the red tape has been overcome. So, I'm wondering if she is still a maybe if...

I think it's pretty common for JUCO players to have a school in mind for where they'll go for their final two years, isn't it? The coach prides himself on where his athletes end up going, you can tell - clearly excited to have his first player going into the B1G. I'm guessing he's a huge help in helping his athletes find programs for their final two years from the start? So it doesn't seem odd to me that someone would know where they're going after JUCO two years ahead of time.

On the transfers thread, someone is pretty convinced that Kylie Miller is transferring in from UCLA to Minnesota. She is coming in January and will set for the Gophers in her senior season. Given the graduation of SSS and with Shaffmaster coming in for 2020, this would not be a shocking news story if it is true.

Yes. A teammate of millers at UCLA told this user that Kylie is leaving to play for the gophers in January.

The scenario is perfect: senior setter leaving MN, Kylie will be a senior. Apparently she's pretty physical. I believe she was the top setter recruit in her class out of high school, #11 overall. If it turns out to be true, great get for MN (on paper).
