Does anyone know if Penn State is a contender for the national championship this year? Or are they just ranked that high because they are the best team on the east coast? Sorry I'm not trying to be cocky or anything I'm just curious.

UCI has been playing incredible volleyball. I have no idea where they were ranked in previous years, but I'm sure it wasn't #2. As for Penn State - I think the jury is still out on that one. They have had a lot of changes to their roster, so we'll have to wait and see. The season is still very young!

UCI plays UCLA at Pauley for it's season opener. Let's see what the Anteaters have, when the game counts. If the Ants can beat the Bruins at Pauley, then the Ants aren't Ain'ts anymore. Watch out for My Boy Jaret Jensen, he'll have a big game against the Bruins. Bookumdanoaloha

UCI is a whole new team this year, and from the looks of it so far, a much better team. I think that the coaching change did them wonders, but keep in mind that they have very few freshman playing. I have only seen them at the Pepp tournament but they were playing very well. I would not be surprised to see them continually ranked pretty high this year.
It will be interesting to see how the other coaching changes affect the teams this year.

Penn State has a veteran team but without an established setter I don't consider them a threat to win it all. They should win the EIVA again but if I had a vote in the poll (I don't), I would rank them somewhere between 7th & 12th right now.
And fyi, I live in the east.

The one reason I see that Penn State could win it is that they have the easiest road into the Final Four. The 4 teams will be 2 from the MPSF, someone from the MIVA, and Penn State. All they need to do is get hot during 2 matches and they can win the title. But I agree with you. Right now, they might be a bit overrated. Its only one position, but how do you replace such a phenominal player like Quineones?

I was talking to one of the Long Beach State coaches last night prior to our match with UCSD, and he felt that Penn State will win their region. He was impressed. BTW, he also informed me that Ptak from IPFW is now touching over 12'! Yikes!!
GO BEACH!

the future
Jeffrey finally listened to his old coaches and has put on some wieght and muscle over the past year and this summer. He is one of the most gifted players in the USA but didn't always take care of himself.
He is bigger, stronger and jumping higher than ever before. I also feel the difficult year that he had last year has turned this boy into a man.
Best to him....look out USCB....put your helmets on!

The only problem with an easy road to the finals, it that you are not tested enough. Look at the schedules of the teams in the MPSF and then look at the schedules of teams from the EIVA and MIVA. The teams in the MPSF play more matches against tough teams. I think that is changing somewhat as teams in the MIVA and EIVA improve, but it isn't quite equal yet.
The more popular volleyball becomes at the high school/club level, the better all of the college teams will be. Florida finally has some decent college club teams - every major college in Florida now has a men's volleyball team. They are all club, but they exist, which is more then we could say three years ago.
