I really like the look of this new facility and can't wait to visit when it opens. It looks like it will blow Wilkinson Hall and the Covelli Center out of the water. And what a great recruitment feature for Iowa volleyball!

Was anyone able to check out the match with Drake yesterday? If so, interested in any observations and, of course, in any status updates on Hoye.

Having been a season ticket holder for many years, I can say that Bond is bringing in better talent and changing the culture of Iowa volleyball. The first couple of years he was heavily reliant on transfers, but now his own recruits are starting to mature and I think that Iowa will be able to consistently place in the upper half of the Big 10 standings. Obviously still below Minnesota/Nebraska/Penn St./Wisconsin, but should be able to hold their own against Michigan, Purdue, etc.

Forgive me for possibly sounding ignorant, but what about harvesting more homegrown talent? The midwest continues to storm as a volleyball hot bed, and Iowa has produced the likes of Mac May and Mikaela Foecke. Minnesota is fantastic at getting its state's top talent (although seems to occasionally lose some to Wisconsin), and I'm willing to bet Hugh greatly helped in developing Minnesota's volleyball culture. Iowa seems to lose out when it comes to other Power 5 programs due to either location (I get it, sometimes you want to go to school out of state) or storied programs (think: Nebraska, Penn State). Would Iowa continue to chip away by cultivating a volleyball culture and thus maybe getting more homegrown talent? Regardless, it's very interesting to watch a program grow.

That looks like a really nice facility, congrats, although I think the could come up with a better name. I would be very excited if Iowa was my team and think that this bodes well for their future. Very interesting to me because Illinois is considering doing the same thing, building a multiuse arena as home for several sports (Volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics and possibly hockey) in the downtown area with a mix of private and public investment. I am on board but not optimistic about the chances. Maybe Iowa can be a good test case? Anyway a couple questions:
1. How far is this from campus and what is the parking situation compared to current facility? Our fans mostly oppose a new arena on grounds that students would be less likely to show up and the lack of free parking. I admit it is taking a gamble because I would say we don't have a big fan base as is despite having a good team. Even this year when the team was really good and all the other sports were horrible we still averaged about 2000 until the hype took off right at the end. The proposed new facility is like a 15-20 min walk or 5-10 minute bus or bike ride from campus and Champaign isn't some huge city with alot of traffic. But even a little inconvenience could be a problem I guess.
2. Where does wrestling compete at and any idea if they will also go to the new arena or is it too small? I know wrestling is big in Iowa so I imagine they might need more than 5000 capacity. I follow wrestling a bit and admire Iowa's program. I am a big fan of Dan Gable and Tom Brands, really enjoy their style.
3. Is Iowa planning to add NCAA hockey? That is the major push for Illinois. Im not opposed to it but would like the AD to get the revenue sports sorted out first and get the department back on better fiscal grounds before adding any new sports. I think their hand is being forced by push to get the development done sooner than later.
Anyway good luck for next year. Do you see your team improving this year or still rebuilding? Chances on making the tourney? I thought Iowa had some good wins this year, just not very consistent. I am expecting Illinois to take a step back after losing Poulter and Bastianelli, but they have some good players returning and coming in so we will see.

I will do my best to respond here to your questions: This arena will be in Coralville so not right on campus. It's about 2 miles from Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where they currently play. I honestly believe this will increase attendance because of the more appealing intimate environment for fans. Averaging around 2000 per match, which we have consistently done in past several years, is really pretty respectable but when in cavernous Carver-Hawkeye, that can really still feel kinda sparse. Wrestling competes in Carver-Hawkeye as well. Iowa led the country in attendance for wrestling home matches again this year with an average of right about 9000 per match so they definitely will not use this new facility. I have read in different articles that Xtream Arena may be used for some other university sports (I could see men's and/or women's gymnastics utilizing it sometimes instead of Carver-Hawkeye, for example) but nothing specifically announced like that other than for volleyball. I have not heard anything about Iowa adding hockey, no. As for our past year, yes, had some great wins but inconsistent, as you mentioned. Season-ending injury to OH Cali Hoye mid-B1G season was just a killer. I realize all teams deal with injuries. But an injury to a two-time 30+ kill (both in B1G play) caliber OH definitely had a HUGE impact for the Hawks. As for this year, I think it looks promising. A big and yet unanswered question is whether or not Hoye will be able to return. But we do have some good OH options if she cannot (senior M Buzzerio, ASU transfer Griere Hughes and incoming Senior Ace Kyndra Hansen). We had all Frosh middles last year so some experience there plus some tall and talented additions/recruits in the middle will surely bode well for us. And setter Brie Orr will be in 3rd year and has developed into a great leader. Obviously, we'll miss the heck out of Louis, Coyle and Kelly, though. Will be interesting but I am personally optimistic. Thanks for the comments and the interest in Hawkeye volleyball and best to Illinois! Have enormous respect for your coaching staff, players and program. Go Hawks!

Corporate Sponsors get first dibs on building names. www.press-citizen.com/story/news/2019/01/24/coralville-arena-finally-has-new-name-xtream-arena-powered-mediacom/2666650002/Coralville officials unveiled the new name and corporate sponsor Thursday. The telecommunications company signed a 10-year marketing agreement to sponsor the arena, the largest development project in the county right now. Per the agreement, Mediacom will provide a wifi network for the arena, advertising for the arena across the state and an undisclosed sum of financial support. Ed Pardini, senior vice president for Mediacom, declined to share how much the company paid for the agreement, saying that the company's market budget is confidential.

Have enormous respect for your coaching staff, players and program. Go Hawks! Iowa won't be adding hockey, but they are trying to get a USHL or semi-pro team to play at the arena. Judging from Bond's comments at the end of the year, I think you have to plan on Hoye not coming back. Buzz has had her moments at OH and we'll need someone to step up and replace Taylor Louis as well. Hopefully Skinner can be as effective as Coyle was at RS. I think the middles will be more involved in the attack this year after getting their feet wet. Orr will be awesome at setter and I think Johnston will settle in nicely at libero. I think the team will be on the bubble or just barely in the tournament in 2019.
