Any guesses on the starters tonight? The Purdue setter is going to give Hawaii a hard time. Maybe Melody should be the M2, she sure stopped the Nevada setter, after the setter was dumping over Hawaii for a couple of games. Or Melody could be their secret weapon

I guess Hawaii should be thankful that Nevada's setter Adams did that to them in all the matches they played against Nevada. Hawaii had a hard time dealing with that dump shot. But that shot only works when the setter has a good pass. Hawaii has gotten used to playing at altitude and did a good job of getting to the Colorado passers. If they can serve well, they can help to nuetralize that dump shot.
A couple of other points to look at. Will Purdue play like they have nothing to lose or will they be on a high from winning and then hit a major low against Hawaii? Hawaii was preping for CSU and now they have to find tape on Purdue. The coaching staff will have to work really hard to figure out what to do.

I think Shoji should definitely start Eckmier or Gregory for game 1, then bring in Sanders to bring energy and quickness. It will help to have strong netplay in the beginning.

My guess (or hope) is that Purdue will lose game 1 because of the letdown. Hawaii has to have a stong start. Did anyone watch the CSU/Purdue game last night? At the end of the match, Chris Mclaughlin said something about one of Purdue's key players probably not playing tonight because after playing 1 match, her knee swells up and she can't play again the next night. I'm not too sure which player he was talking about or how influential she is to the team. But he indicated that's why Purdue was able to beat Wisconsin but then falter against Northwestern.

The coaching staff of both Hawaii and Purdue had a chance to scout each other's team and both will have access to the televised tapes of the matches. I am sure Dave Shoji and Charlie Wade are spending countless hours trying to figure out how to stop the setter dumps. It certainly will not come as a surprise, like it did for Colorado State. The Colorado State coach admitted that it was a mistake not to "obsessively" track the setter, who he thought was the best hitter on the Purdue team.

I believe they were discussing Mel Ukovich. She is an integral part of their success. She had a very promising freshman year that ended in injury. As it did that year, Purdue's success follows Ukovich's on-court time.

Since the setter is only front-row during 2-hitter rotations, in most normal blocking schemes, it is normally the responsibility of the left-front blocker to take the setter dump, not the MB. If the MB jumps on the setter dump it leaves the first-tempo attack wide open.
Therefore, if UH wants to stop Purdue's setter on the dump, Arnott or Boogaard should commit on that play, not the MBs.

Not to sure about that. According to the box stats, everyone who played during the Wisconsin match, played in the Northwestern match. Cappa only played 4 games instead of 5, but I don't know if there is any reason to look into that. Mader played against Northwestern but not Wisconsin. Both players are leftside hitters.

Hawai'i needs to limit Dargan's effectiveness at the net. If they can force her to set the ball instead of attacking it when she's a front row player, they'll be okay.

Also, most setter front dumps end up in that zone around the 10-foot line between court positions 1 and 2 and can be picked up easily by the defensive player playing RB, if that person isn't snoozing.
Same thing with back dumps that end up in that zone around the 10-foot line between court positions 4 and 5 and can be picked up by the LB defender.
Anything over the top by the setter on second contact is scooped up by the MB (MB stands for middle-back in this instance, not middle-blocker) defender moving laterally along the endline.
Now, if the women's game ever developed a lethal left-handed setter that could actually turn and HIT THE FRIGGIN BALL on two (like the great Olympian and Gold Medalist Jeff Stork) that would be something special. Most women's setters (and a majority of men's setters) are the ABSOLUTE SUCK when dumping the ball. My grandma could dig that crap.

Also to the last also, if you can pick up the first couple of dump attempts by any setter and convert on your side with a good transition play, that setter will usually go away from attempting to dump for the rest of the match. That's because most setters are strategically dumb and forget to go back to the play if they see it didn't work the first couple times in a match.

If the opposing team really takes it to the setter and starts to hurt them because they transition well out of that dump shot, the setter will start to second guess themselves. I think the object of this match for Hawaii is to rattle the setter. If they can get into Dargan's head, Purdue is going to have a tough time winning the match.

Purdue is going to have a tough time winning the match. Let's just leave it at that last line. No ifs.

What's the deal with Prince? Someone reported that Wade said she had Mono? Is this true?? How could she be allowed to play with this?? It is highly contagious..or is this just another rumor to garner pity on the part of UH?
