UCLA falls to USC in Pac-12 tournament for second loss of season dailybruin.com/2019/04/26/beach-volleyball-falls-to-usc-in-pac-12-tournament-for-second-loss-of-seasonHead coach: "You hate to lose to (USC) at any point. But if you’re going to lose one, that’s the one. Of the four times I expect to play them in the postseason, this is the least important one." Stein Metzger said the courts at USC made it hard for UCLA to jump serve. "The end lines are shorter than what are regulation, so we don’t have our full space to jump serve." A win this morning would send UCLA to a rematch with USC in the Pac-12 championship final at 1:30 p.m. " We’re going to win it all," said freshman Abby Van Winkle. ----- repost here Ed Chan’s article: volleyballmag.com/ncaa-beach-042719/“I told the girls,” USC coach Anna Collier said, ” ‘You know what? You can’t have any more fun than this. This is what life is all about, working hard, being challenged, playing good volleyball, and executing what you’ve worked on.’ “That’s what makes it so much fun, because you’ve put in the hard work, and it paid off.’ USC won the first two NCAA beach championships before relinquishing the title to UCLA last year. USC is hoping to not only win the Pac-12 title, but also get the No. 1 NCAA tournament seed when the eight-team bracket is announced Sunday night. Both the Trojans and Bruins are locks to be in the field. . . It was at No. 4 when Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser defeated UCLA’s Savvy Simo and Lea Monkhouse 21-16, 21-15. “Maja and Joy, they train like that for us, but we don’t see them compete like that, so, for me, that was special,” Collier said. “They’ve been working hard and I’ve been hammering them. I truly have, I’ve been saying, ‘We’ve got to get this done. You do it here, there’s no reason why it can’t happen here.’ “So for them to step up like that, in that kind of a match, and play well, I really thought they held their composure. They’re one of those teams that get over-anxious and overplays the ball and over-everything, but I thought that they held their composure, and stayed patient, and that to me was huge.”

Mr.Metzger trying to justify the loss.

How does USC even host with non-regulation courts? Minimum is 3 meters (5m for FIVB World competition) free zone beyond endlines. Many college courts do not meet either minimum. Will look closer at stream today and guess.

Did he talk about how some of his pairs choked? The McNamara serve into the antenna to end the match on a really high jump serve toss must have triggered this whinging either from the player or Stein. UCLA was supposed to host but couldn’t get it’s act together so no excuses Stein. Excellent quote that didn’t come out the way she intended “We’re going to come through the loser’s bracket because that’s what we do,” Van Winkle said.

1) Petty 2) is this true? How does USC even host with non-regulation courts? Ha, classic Stein. Stein has absolutely ZERO to complain about. UCLA/Stein has set the stage for illegal setting by groveling over the beauty of SS's hands. By publicly stating that "SS has the best hands...." sets her hands as the gold standard when, in reality and in according to the definition of a "carry/lift” her hands are illegal as are many of the UCLA's players hands. You cannot HOLD onto the ball prior to releasing. This is no small advantage UCLA is recognizing. If these sets were being called consistently, UCLA would be forced to bump set or make a legal hand set. It is not just marginally bad it is AWFUL. It was painful to watch.

Dennis and Káiser are both incredibly athletic and talented players, more so than Monkhouse at least. Shame they don’t have the mental composure to stop making silly mistakes in crunch time.

I find this so interesting because I watched UCLA in Miami and saw catch/release and lifts in setting in many of the pairs! It was systemic! The problem is refs lack confidence calling the subjective elements of the game. In many cases refs have been instructed to call double contacts based on ball rotation, but this isn’t necessarily indication of a double contact. Some rotation can ensue with perfectly legal contact. Therefore some refs make calls based on rotation and over manage the game while others call very little and under-managing the game. Neither is correct, but better ref coaching could help. The “lift/carry” call (or lack thereof) is increasingly concerning with more players electing to use their hands so additional ref coaching is needed. In the case of an illegal set in terms of the lift/carry call, IMO a more tactical approach could work. If the standard for a legal set with respect to lift/carry was an imaginary horizontal line at the bottom of the player’s chin as representing the lowest point in which the hands could dip prior to release could help to provide some uniformity/consistency. Multiple UCLA (and a sprinkling of others) consistently held on too long prior to release and dipped to chest (and below) level. I understand this is going to be addressed prior to NCAA Championships.
