Halle Blend Breaks All-Time Assists Record for Caltech Volleyball




OBERLIN, Ohio — Senior setter Halle Blend of the Caltech volleyball team set the program's all-time career assists record this month, topping the previous mark of 1,335 set by Megan Kennedy in 2003.

Blend achieved the record on Sep. 15 in Caltech's opening match of the 2023 Oberlin Invitational. In a four-set match against the College of Wooster, the veteran provided 21 assists — her most in a match all season to that point.

Hailing from Farmers Branch, Texas and a Hockaday School alumna, Blend surpassed the all-time record just six contests into her third collegiate season; the team did not compete in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the cancellation of the season.

The standout will look to add to her historic total as the team works its way through the 2023 campaign. On Sep. 23, the setter recorded a season-high 29 assists to help lead the team to a monumental win over Pomona-Pitzer.

"Halle has been an outstanding setter since she first entered our program," Head Coach Tom Gardner said. "Her ability to get to balls and set with purpose has made all of our hitters better and contributed to the most successful teams in program history. I am very proud of Halle for this great accomplishment and appreciate her dedication to her team and teammates throughout the years."

Blend earned First Team All-SCIAC honors in 2021 and Second Team in 2022, and she was just six assists shy of setting the single season assists record in 2021.

Volleyball Tests Cal Lutheran in Five-Set Battle



PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech volleyball team hosted the Regals of Cal Lutheran University on Friday night in an exhilarating five-set clash. The Beavers came into the match with two SCIAC wins in just three games after opening conference play with a straight-set win over Redlands before topping Pomona-Pitzer in a five-set thriller.

LOS ANGELES – The Caltech volleyball team faced nearby rival Occidental College in a wild five-set match Friday evening.



Caltech Volleyball Takes Occidental to Five Sets

Till was the match's top scorer with 21.5 points from 21 kills and a block assist, while Perhach added 19 points with two service aces and block assists, plus a match-high .417 hit percentage from her 16 kills on 36 attacks with just one error.

Giulia Murgia was the match's top playmaker with 35 assists, also getting down for 13 digs and dealing a service ace, and Celine Wu led the team with 21 digs, also serving up two assists and earning a kill from the back row.

Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will return home to Braun Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 10 to face the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps colleges

Caltech hosts #6 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps colleges this Tuesday Oct 10 at Braun gym on the beautiful Caltech campus. The parking and game are free to attend.

CalTech will have a tall task against CMS. The program has made serious progress over the past few years, although not really evident by the win-loss record. I think they will pick up some wins in the second half of conference play.

This is a lot more competitive than I expected. Both teams seem to be having a lot of fun and are playing hard. CMS took the first set -20.

What do you know D-3 volleyball on a Tuesday night.

CMS lost one match all season last year the regional finals. They are ranked in the Top 10 nationally. Caltech always plays hard.

Forcollege volleyball fans here on Volleytalk I think it is great that D-3 gets some love and respect here.

CMS certainly living up to there national ranking here in the 2nd set but the Caltech team plays on with enthusiasm.

It was very lopsided, which is what I expected. But I was impressed with how Caltech fought back from 24-11 to 24-14. It was lopsided but they kept fighting even though they realistically had no chance to win the set

CMS is likely going to handle the SCIAC. I think, right now, they are a step behind the front-runners: Juniata, Wisconsin Oshkosh, and Hope. But they are definitely going to be in the conversation at the end of the year, especially since they are hosting the championships this year.

Cal Tech has become a respectable program. No longer a walk-over in their conference, they are well-coached and play hard. Always fun to watch.

Volleyball Battles No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps



Caltech -20 -14 -10

PASADENA, Calif. — Caltech Volleyball faced the nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas on Tuesday in an inter-conference evening clash at Braun Gymnasium.
Perhach led the team in kills with seven while Parker recorded the second-most, with six. Blend led the team in assists (13).

First-year libero Celine Wu kept a number of points alive throughout the match; she tied for the most digs among all players with 17.

The Beavers tied the Athenas in service aces (three) and solo blocks (two). They recorded two service errors to the visitors' seven.

Next up for head coach Tom Gardner and the program is a match against the University of La Verne Leopards on Oct. 17 in another Tuesday night home clash. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
