Years ago Jolt Cola delivered a respectable impulse response (All the sugar and twice the caffeine) ...

They have all passed Differential Equations Probably the single most hilarious post I've read in the past month. Made me laugh so loud and hard that I had to walk away a bit and grab some water. Also because of my personal connection with DiffEQs.

I've been mentoring Science Olympiad events over the past several years and I am still doing it even after my son left high school. One of my fellow mentors is a Cal Tech grad, and I'll have to say he's impressively smart. We were at the NorCal State Championship this past weekend where our team took 2nd place (out of 28 entered).

bigfan, why are you a Caltech fan? All their athletes play hard, compete hard and know they are going to lose more than they are going to win. The athletes don't pout or complain. The coach's dont yell at their players or refs or act like fools. It is free to see them play and I live 10 mintues away.

I went to Caltech (in the 1980s) and I didn't follow any of their athletic teams then and I don't follow them now. !

Caltech had this strange requirement where every student must pass 3 terms of Phys Ed. However, if you were a member of one of the intercollegiate sports teams, you get PE credit for the term your sports team is active. If you quit before the end of the season, you don’t get the PE credit for the term. Even then, I thought the PE requirement was odd for a college because none of my other high school friends who went to other colleges had this. It seemed so...prep school to me. This was also a way for the school to fill its sports teams’ rosters. LOL!
I don’t know if they still require this.

Caltech had this strange requirement where every student must pass 3 terms of Phys Ed. MIT required four PE classes. Each class was 1/2 a semester, so if you wanted you could do them all in a year. They also had a swim test you had to pass to graduate (there were some legendary stories about people taking their swim test during finals week senior year...). After passing the swim test, you could optionally tread water for another few minutes and get a "small boat certification" that would let you check boats out to go on the river. I passed this the first week I was a freshman, but I never ended up taking a boat out onto the river.

Caltech's sailing class is the only one where you had to pass a swim test. I could swim really well but, you know, "F*** sailing!"
One of the ways you could fulfill the PE requirement is through self study, where you basically exercise on your own (you're under the Honor Code) and you have to sign some papers and document your regimen. I've heard of students taking this route but didn't actually know anyone who did.

I checked MIT's website and they now allow some "extreme" sports to count for the PE requirement. One option that Wolfgang would be interested in is to take a parkour class. You love to do it so much in video games.... Also, varsity sports counts for the requirement. Playing on the volleyball team two years would meet the PE requirement, for instance. Or being in ROTC gives you 1/2 credit for the requirement too.
