Last night I was able to finally watch Makua Marumoto play, as I was able to catch the last set of Hawai`i Baptist and Maryknoll. I had the honor of watching Makua play last year in the state tournament and thought he had a huge upside and potential.
Watching him play last night for just a set looks as if he has become more explosive on his attacks and hits a nice ball. I didn't watch the whole match but at the end of the match they replayed some of his highlights and it looks as if he has a variety of shots and not just the hard ball. He is in the serve receive rotation, but at this point not sure how well his serve receive will hold up at the collegiate level. Makua also looks like he bulked up a bit and put on some muscle.
His interview after the match garnered a lot more respect from me as well. As he seems like a very team oriented player and not someone that everything is about him. As he is clearly the star of his team, but quickly diverted credit to his teammates. Considering with the current situation we are in Makua might have played his last high school match last night and being questioned about that he has said that he will continue to hit the weight room and work on his speed and agility. He is also playing club ball for Coach Kevin Wong and has plans to play this summer forget which tournament he said or where considering that too won't be cancelled. He also mentioned that he is planning on training with Gage at his home in California. From his interview it looks as if Makua has a very good work ethic and is willing to put in the time and work to improve his game and compete for playing time.

I'd take a humble kid who's willing to work for a starting spot than a kid who thinks he's God's gift to the sport.

I'm also hoping this is how he actually is as my observation is based off that one interview.

I feel bad for this year's team. And I'm now also a bit concerned about how this Corona virus will affect next year's team in terms of players leaving the team and recruits de-committing.

Who left and who decomitted? And did students leave the team or just left the University because it was shutting down?

Do you have any inside information to any of this? Because why would Hawai'i be any different than any other collegiate program that their season abruptly ended. Is there something else going on that you know?

I'm thinking that because UH has shut down so to speak most students/student athletes have gone home to weather out this pandemic. Classes have moved to online courses so makes sense to go home. One of my coworkers is on leave because she's out of UH dorms & classes are online

And I am not bit concerned at all about how the Corona Virus affects other collegiate programs.

Anastassiades is likely to come back as the team manager. The other three seniors will decide what to do after the NCAA announces their final decisions (the scholarship situation etc.) There is a 50/50 chance all three come back as well. The NCAA announcement is supposed to happen soon (either this weekend or next week)

Despite the NCAA approving seniors to return for another season, it was announced on the local news that the NCAA is leaving it up to each University's discretion to allow it or not. As of this evening's news cast it wasn't clear just yet if the University of Hawai'i will follow the NCAA's approval of allowing seniors to return.

David Matlin isn’t that dumb UH mens volleyball is a money maker.
