Egonu came off the bench against DR, I wonder if she'll start against USA.

It all matters who Italy will play. Will they respect the young US squad enough to put in Egonu? or will they let the other opposite (Sorokaite) play. The US definitely has size to bother Italy, but then again their passing against Serbia was problematic. Do not think the tandem of Kingdon and Parsons will cut it. I actually prefer Kingdon. I think this might be the match we will see Lee. Maybe he was hiding her for a match like this. Do not think this will be much of a battle actually - I see Italy winning - especially if they put a strong line up out there. Hopefully the sets will be close and it will not be a sweep. It will be good game experience for this squad. I would like to start with this line up -- but then what do I know:
Poulter-Drews (if Hancock starts, then Thompson) Rettke-Ogbogu (although all the middles are playing really well) -- I do like that we seem to have blocking middle blockers (although the competition hasn't really been top notch). Kingdon, Lee Courtney
Without Egonu, it could be a battle, if she plays, they could exclusively go to her and we just better hope it's one of her off days.
What I do like though is Karch's coaching so far (albeit against weaker competition). I like that he's giving the girls tempo space -- instead of forcing them into the ultra quick offense. I do wish I could see how Foecke would have fared against Italy as I like her potential (if she sticks with the national team) - she seems to be able to pass (where she's not too much of a liability) and can hit a variety of tempos. She has nice height and a good flow to her game. Is that BYU outside hitter on the wide roster? I feel like her game would be similar to a Kingdon - in that they'd be relied on to pass and handle those garbage sets. Feel Parsons (Wilhite) still needs some time to develop (but eventually other up and comers will surpass her).

It seems that Karch has been switching setters back and forth, and mixing the middles and hitters with each setter, trying different combos. I expect a starting lineup of Poulter, Courtney, Ogbogu, Thompson, H. Tapp, Parsons, Lee/Kingdon. If the point is to put up the best line-up against the best team, I would expect Poulter, Courtney, Rettke, Ogbogu (although it'll be Washington), Thompson and (sadly) Kingdon. Who would be your 2nd OH?

Kingdon has not been impressive, but she's been fairly consistent in what she brings. Through the end of the first week, however, Wilhite was statistical better in almost everything. Wilhite had one game to forget yesterday. Thompson has been impressive, and much like Rettke, her tall frame has aided her success. I mean, both J.T. and D.R. are just hitting over the block, whereas Kingdon needs to tool the block or find seams. Also, Kingdon is not going to overpower blockers regularly. Overall, I think Kingdon is just too small to be an impact player. She's never going to carry the team. We need hitters who can take over a game, if we ever expect to win a gold medal.

I cannot see a sweep by Italy. Probably a 3-1 Italy win. I'd be happy if we take it to 5.

#16Bulgaria stands at 0-4 (4-12) #11Belgium stands at 2-2 (6-9) #9Serbia stands at 2-2 (7-7) #6Japan stands at 2-2 (8-7)
So clearly the US women have taken care of business and we AGAIN have shown significant depth in our program.
#2 Italy stands at 4-0 (12-3)
Beyond their record is it safe to say this Italian team is the most "A" rostered team in these first two weeks? (if that question makes sense)
Regardless this should be fun to watch.
I'd like to see Larson/Lee Poulter Thompson Ogbogu/Washington Courtney

Thank you! wishful thinking, really wanted Lee to work with an experience OH like Jordan Wilhite-Parsons instead.

Has Jordan Thompson always been a right side attacker? Does she have a future as an OH on the left after her college career comes to an end?

You don't get set 100 times in a match without being able to hit from anywhere on the court. Edit: Turns out she hit on the left way much more frequently for Cincinnati this past year than she did on the right.

Has anyone noticed we are not setting as fast as we were last year or is it just me?

Has anyone noticed we are not setting as fast as we were last year or is it just me? I’ll bet Luka told Karch to give up the low and fast game plan because everyone is onto it. Plus I’m loving all of the production out of the middles and on the right side. Last year was hard to watch. Plus I’m pretty sure that system was built around Hill and Murphy.
