1) Who would be the blocker for a Harward - Slater pair? 2) Dennis - Kaiser were definitely inconsistent, but until someone else beats them, they would be bumped up to 3s. They can play well as evidenced by beating Monkhouse - Simo 21-16, 21-15 in the PAC-12 winner’s bracket finals. 3) The 2020 schedule is finally out. usctrojans.com/sports/womens-beach-volleyball/schedule/2020Two trips to the East Coast and it looks like they’ll play every single Top 20 team except #16 Georgia St and #19 Arizona St. Does anyone else have a schedule like this? (Edit: I looked up UCLA and they only miss #14 South Carolina and #20 Charleston) UCLA - at least 3 times LSU - once Florida St - 3 times Hawai’i - once Pepperdine - twice CalPoly - once LMU - once Stetson - once Cal - twice FIU - once Long Beach St - once Arizona - once South Carolina - once GCU - once Georgia St - none TCU - once Stanford - once Arizona St - none but maybe in PAC-12 championships Charleston - once

She and Harward would be formidable.

Can anyone tell me what happened to Julia Devine...a Bay Area 6'2 recruit who signed an NLI for USC Beach prior to the 2018/19 season? She doesn't show up on last year's or this year's roster. She committed as a HS sophomore, I believe, and it seems that talented 'bigs' are harder to come by than all of the littles in beach. Was she cut, decided not to play...??

She quit after about a week of fall practice her freshman year. She was at USC as as student last I heard (which was some time ago).

The 'regular student' life at USC must be pretty compelling...

I've always wondered what happens when a HS sophomore commits, then slowly starts to realize (or has already been feeling for a year or so) that 1) VB 2-3x a week and all weekend is getting really, really old, and it only gets more time consuming in college, and 2) Mommy and Daddy will pay for college anyway.

If I recall correctly, I sat near Julie and I think Hannah Martin during the PAC-12 Championship at Merle Norman. They must have forged enough of a bond with the rest of the team to come out and cheer on the team. if the recruits are not able to make the top 7 pairs by the time the season starts then they simply have to make the most of their admissions and become normal students. The non-AllAmerican recruits are probably told this from the beginning and welcome the preferred walk-on benefit. Ariyana Kim and Anaree Smith are going to have a tough hill to climb this year. 18 currently on the roster with one being Tina Graudina so maybe 3 left off to get to 14. That being said, not sure if Dain will go with more than 14.

Excellent Volleyballmag Sandcast with HC Dain Blanton (and Travis Mewhirter and alum Tri Bourne) volleyballmag.com/sandcast-011520/You’ll have to listen for tidbits about USC topics: 1) Abril Bustamante 2) Tina Graudina 3) Haley Hallgren 4) Experimenting with pair combinations in fall 2019 5) Anna Collier 6) Tri’s pursuit of the Olympics 7) Alumnae match and reaching out to April, Sarah, Kelly, Jen, etc. Such a good conversationalist! Combine that with his likability and enthusiasm. I don’t see who’s going to be able to beat him at recruiting. Still continuing with his broadcasting career too so his visibility in the sport will continue to rise. Confirms he’ll be the sideline reporter for NBC at Tokyo 2020.

Steino is going with 18, from all appearances. I guess we'll know more in February whether the bottom 2-3 (both USC and UCLA) stay on the roster if they don't have any realistic chance of playing. From the coach's perspective, I don't think there is any downside to rostering them if they make practices more complete and competitive, and everything about the metrics and process for how to gain playing time is transparent and rational.

Having a large roster is one thing when you have a bunch of seniors that will be graduating, and the younger players know that they will possibly get in at one of the flights the following year. UCLA had a large roster last year, but the players knew that they would be graduating several starters.
I don't know if it is helpful to carry a large roster if players are not getting playing time (for several years, or ever). It can create dissension among the players. Limited players travel, and many schools have limited courts to practice on. Often coaches concentrate their effort on the starters and the non-starters get little attention. Many players will transfer or quit altogether.

Some passing thoughts:
1) Kyla Doig- Paige Dreeuws as a pair? Would that mean Dorn - Ebertin will be kept together? 2). Only 3 real match dates at Merle Norman this season (not counting alumnae scrimmage), but multiple opportunities to cheer on the Trojans at other local sites. All home matches are on weekdays in the middle of the day. Are they really expecting student support or is it just cheaper to do it this way? Mar 5 - LMU Mar 11 - Pepp and UCLA Apr 14 - Cal Poly and Beach
Local matches not at home: Mar 7/8 - PAC-12 South Inv. at Santa Monica and UCLA Mar 24 - at Pepperdine Apr 11/12 - East Meets West Inv. at Manhattan Beach Apr 23-25 - PAC-12 Championships at UCLA

Anyone know the rules on travel squad size? Does NCAA limit the number of players that can travel or do coaches (or athletic directors) decide?

Anyone know the rules on travel squad size? Does NCAA limit the number of players that can travel or do coaches (or athletic directors) decide? As far as I know, the only limit the NCAA puts in place is for the national championship. I think that was 14 last year, maybe only 12 - I forget how they mandate teams list their alternates. Otherwise, it depends on the institution, though the conferences can mandate this if they wish. Not sure any do. CCSA has not in the past.
