It’s official now? There were rumors floating around around a month ago. That’s a loss for USC, good player. I’d be willing to wager a small amount that she ends up across town. Would love to see her at UCLA, but my understanding is that she is from a family of Trojans. I don't know about that, or why it would really matter given USC is out of the picture, but I do know her dad played QB for UNLV back in the day.

So from the Day 1 photo posted on social media, the entering class consists of: Nicole Nourse Audrey Nourse Kyla Doig Harper Hallgren Belen Castillo Anaree Smith Paige Dreeuws Ariyana Kim Belen Castillo being a transfer from Cal? She didn’t play indoor for Cal the last two years and no years with their beach volleyball team. 6’3” though and a former middle blocker. 247sports.com/college/hawaii/Board/102452/Contents/Cal-Volleyball-Player-Looking-to-Transfer-117629704/Paige Dreeuws being a transfer from Hawaii. Should have two years left and previously a consistent 5 Pair player. No Anastasia Lima, Presley Simo, or Molly Davis. Laurel Kujan and Hannah Martin weren’t in the photo either. Peri Green is no longer listed on the 2020 Roster but went to Europe with the team.

Simo’s Insta says University of Alabama, I think.

I think everyone knows knows that if they don’t make the top 7 pairs, then they’re not on the roster. I’m pretty sure some of the non-scholarship recruits are happy to get into a great school and if they can’t make the top 7 pairs then they might as well focus on academics. I have no idea why UCLA carries 18-19 on their roster. I suppose it’s a similar situation to walk-ons in football and basketball. That first photo did indeed match the roster: usctrojans.com/roster.aspx?path=wbvball9 returnees but Tina Graudina probably won’t play this year so 8 actual of which 6 played in the Top 5 pairs. 8 new enrollees so 8+8 = 16 => 2 will probably drop off the roster before the season.

Castillo at Cal had some issues with team rules, I thought. Well, Belen’s probably/hopefully grown up a bit in the past two years and is here as a grad student, possibly for two years or more? Her Instagram besides the typical beach photos includes shots of her on the US Youth National Team alongside Khalia Lanier, Kathryn Plummer, Morgan Hentz and more. That’s some elite company on a squad of 11/12. She had the talent. Will she regain the focus? Can she transition like Cannon or Poletto? Took them a year of playing to turn the corner but it was worth the investment.

Graudina has won an Olympic spot with Latvia just now in a qualifying tournament in China. So oddly, this opens up the possibility she can return to USC for Spring Semester, and play. But if I'm the Latvian Federation, I wouldn't allow it.

But if I'm the Latvian Federation, I wouldn't allow it. Very happy for Tina, great kid. And in this case, she’s in the driver seat, as she is by far the best Latvian player, and Maris (her dad) is a very well known and very well connected politician in Latvia. In other words, if she wants to return to USC, Latvia ain’t saying sh@t. Now, whether USC has any available schollie money is another subject entirely.

Looks like the gap year is still on despite the early Olympic qualification. Training in LA and a P1440 in November are still TBC but on the calendar right now as I understand.

Slightly off topic, but UCLA Softball will have the same issue... their two best players made the USA Softball Olympic team, and will not participate this school year. And since the pitcher Garcia (also won POY) had already red shirted once, it's probably it for her at UCLA.
It makes me wonder if Graudina will want to return to USC after the Olympics. The difference is Graudina is an underclassman so would possibly want to get her degree. Given her partner options with Latvia I'm not sure whether she could even make a living at Pro Beach on the FIVB.

Graudina won European Championship and also got the ticket to Tokio from the Olympic Qualification tournament this year with her partner Kravcenoka. Both of them are quite young, so I'd think they have good chance to make their living in beach volley. Of course graduation would be very good for her post-career days.
