Wasn't able to attend today... any insights, surprises, or observations?
I know most just watched their own court, but curious if some of the player moves (or lack there of) had the expected effect...
did see a couple of top seeds in respective pools finish second, and some fairly low point percentages of those that held on to the top rankings, but the scores only tell part of the story, so hoping there might be the odd bit of first hand reporting from the bleacher seats (or the "snack" area that happens to have beer for those that prefer gluten).

Not much wandering around. I think the only thing I noticed was Coast 18s (passed the court on the way to get beer). They played OCVC 18s and won. That team is not the same from last year. Looked like some kids from the Coast 18s last year, some kids from that Epic 17s. Heard a rumor that 2 players are gap year kids. Solid passing and defense. Then I had to get a beer.
Most of the brackets played out as expected. There was one court with only 3 teams. Someone dropped out? Wonder if that pool gets the win 25-0 for each team?
Sorry not much help. I probably saw more games but really that was all that stood out.

... There was one court with only 3 teams. Someone dropped out? Wonder if that pool gets the win 25-0 for each team? 3 Team bracket was necessary due to total number of teams (103). In the past, if it's a planned three team bracket (as here) they play three sets to 25, regardless of the result of the first 2. If a team bails (no-shows), then you get 25-0 for each of the typical two sets as a forfeit.

But now I'm confused, weren't one of the trolls predicting 15s gold for Seaside?? Maybe you're confusing these reply with the Trolls? (I have the trolls blocked, so unless someone else quotes them, I no longer see their posts. ). Nah, I was just laughing about Seaside not even fielding a 15s team after one of the knuckleheads was trolling by predicting they'd win gold this year in that division. (I need to do a better job of blocking the dummies, haha) Fun first weekend - first year in high school division for us, big step up in every aspect of the game. Real volleyball getting played on most courts, was nice to see.

Looks like Beach Cities 17s didn’t show up (was a 4 team pool) but they scored all of those matches 25-12, 25-13. Not 25-0. Guessing that would skew results too much?

My son (who is 15, 5'7", and playing up for Genuine 17) should never have to play against someone with more volleyball experience than himself.

Looks like I was wrong on both counts. I was referring to pool 26, which was a scheduled 3 team pool. Each team in that pool only played 4 sets (all matches were 2-0), not two matches of 3 sets. Not cool. Looking at last year, when a team dropped out after the schedule was released in a "points" tourney, the remaining teams were awarded 25-12 and 25-13. I guess that's for cumulative ratio, but since teams are only ranked on points, it doesn't make much sense for that situation. However, at JBI, they awarded 25-0's. I have no idea why there's a distinction.

Why didn’t your club discuss this with you before you committed your son to playing that age group? Not sure if your son is new or not, so just asking. There aren’t that many gap year kids and yes they are good, but so are many legit 17/18s. The 17/18s play together in SCVA until the big tourneys. This is to help grow top level athletes. The top teams in 17s & 18s all have D1 level college hopefuls. I looked up the results, Genuine 17s was in an all 17s bracket. Your team went 2-1 unless you are saying that there are boys playing 17s when they are seniors. There is nothing wrong with that. Way better than the holdback world of basketball. It’s all based on birth year. I would discuss with your club if the 17s is the right age group for your son.

a .v.: ignore this poster. he is a troll and recently just posts nonsense in boys club threads. probably a 20-something year old coach or former club player that thinks the caricatures of club parents and players he makes up are funny.

The block function is your friend. Progress: Did anyone else catch 14's now have qualifiers, BTW? That should help sort the competitive teams from the beginners (and goes hand in hand with having a 14 Club division at HC and JBI.)

I did notice that about the 14s qualifiers. That is a good thing to help developing teams learn and gain confidence. Although, except for a few teams the overall top D1 group in 14s I think may not be as strong/deep as past few years. Don't get me wrong at this age that is totally fine as not yet playing on mens net. Only basing on that it seemed only a few top clubs have had consistent 12/13s past couple years. Yeah, the 14s teams last year were way more stacked. Especially bay to bay and SCVC. Can't wait to see SCVC's opposite on the higher net this year, a 6'5 absolute beast shouldn't have a problem bouncing on some 16s teams.
