Looking ahead: The Wahine's schedule next year will include Top 25 teams Washington, Penn State, Southern California, UCLA and Loyola Marymount.

Did you read that whole article? Basically a could of, would of , should of type article. If only Prince were healthy, if only Hittle brought her libero jersey (wtf?) Hawaii would have won, and still touting Kamanao for POY I see.

I think this article is the perfect example of why many Hawaii fans act the way they do. The fans attitude is to a large extent media driven. When countless televison news stories, or newspaper articles reinforce the idea that Hawaii got jobbed in the seedings, or are a number 1 team, it's only natural for many fans to honestly feel the same way. Many of the articles are obviously written with a pro-Hawaii slant so it's not surprising that the casual fan is shocked when Hawaii loses. Hawaii is very lucky that the team is convered as much as it is, most other teams are lucky to get a one paragraph blurb at the end of the sports section (maybe even less).

Sometimes I feel the media though does give the fans a false impression of how good their team is.

Yes - I read the whole article - just being a little sarcastic because I'm sick of reading about how they got screwed, who is hurt, who is sick, and now I'm already reading about next year.....

i disagree, i think it was an even-handed article that brings up the kind of thoughts that go through your head when you lose an agonizingly close match like that. and let's face it, the wahine had a lot of bad things happen to them the past few weeks (and i'm not talking about the travel or anything). true, i think the big media attention is hard on the wahine, and i think there is too much pressure on them by postseason, and that's made them come out tight too often. kamana'o said they played well in game three because they had nothing to lose. they should be playing like that all the time, but the attention and hopes of the people here has been detrimental, i think.

excited about next year's schedule, though!

No doubt that the media does this because it sells copies or increases viewership. I also think many of the local reporters probably do support this team on a personal level, and that will undoubtedly show in their reporting. As a Wahine fan, that's OK with me. Anything that builds up and supports this program is a good thing around here. I think most true fans can see through the hype, if we choose to.

Hmm. Where did you get the idea that the typical Hawaii fan was shocked to lose to Wisconsin. From what I been reading, almost all fans expressed appreciation for the Wahine going as far as they did. There were nothing but praise and congratulations for an outstanding year to a team that far exceeded fans' and coaches' expectations. Shoji kept saying that this is a year when any team in the top twenty can beat each other. There is so much parity. This may not be true next year, when Nebraska is expected to dominate with its all-world recruits. At the end of the year, records sometimes mislead. For example, both Hawaii and Wisconsin are young teams. There are two things usually true of young teams. They tend to be inconsistent and they tend to improve over the course of the year as the inexperienced gain experience. Another example, is UCLA. There were high expectations for this team; they were rated third in the nation in pre-season polls. They had a roster of talented and athletic personnel. The team lost far more than expected. Volleyball is a team game that depends on that elusive element, "chemistry." However, a talented team may lack chemistry at the start of the year, then come together at the end of the year. I think that was true of UCLA members, who in an article, were quoted as saying that the post-season was a new beginning for them and their post-season definitely showed it.

Let us enjoy this year's FF before we take on the continuing angst and sorrow of the Wahine. We have 4 great teams (3 Pac-10) contending for the National Championship, PLEASE NO SOUR GRAPES right now.

Hawaii DID get robbed in the seedings and hostings. So did many other schools. The criteria for seeding and travelling teams by the NCAA committee MUST BE REVIEWED!

The media here does not give us a false impression of the Wahine. We know for ourselves how the Wahine are as we follow them from year to year. We know, for example, that the Wahine accomplished way more than what they were supposed to with seven seniors graduating and, except for Kamana'o, all new first stringers. The media merely got us to bond with these new faces. If false impressions were made (and I don't believe so), blame the coaches. They first ranked Hawaii #13 (we were surprised at that), then they voted the Wahine all the way up to #1. The Wahine themselves were most responsible for the coaches actions- they won 30 games in a row, no other team did this. In this regard, there was no false impression. It was actual. Losing the single game to Wisconsin and getting booted as a result does not at all change this actuality. The Wahine win-loss record is the best this year: 30 wins only one loss. If you had the same kind of media support there and elsewhere on the mainland, imagine how the sport would be.

Yes, what would have been the results had Prince been healthy and Watanabe hadn't broken her hand! What's so wrong about still touting Kamana'o for the POY? She's that good! She's our candidate and we are proud of her. This is how we are in Hawaii and this is what makes Hawaii a great volleyball venue.

The season has ended for Hawaii. Now stop the bashing and give credit where it's due.

Whenever the Wahine lose it is a tragic day in Hawaii. Thus these articles make the fans feel better.

Agreed. Congrats to Minnesota, USC, Washington and Stanford. Congrats also to runnersup OSU, UCLA, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

First off did you actually read the article because in there it didn't say that the Wahine would have won if all those things fell into place. Dave said that "he's not saying that the Wahine would have won" but what if...what could've happened if all those things fell into place. But he did say that he thinks the Wahine would have been in any match that they played. There is no place in that article that Dave said that the Wahine would have won should all of that stuff mentioned above would have happened.
