Not to rain on UCLA's nice run but I realized that in my 4 years of watching them they have not won a 5 game match against some of the top tier teams in the country - Stanford, USC, Hawaii etc. (OK, so they got jobbed against USC this year) Whether they jump out to a 2-0 lead or come from behind, they just couldn't seem to pull it out. I wonder if its UCLAs lack of a true star - they have such a good, well rounded team that they can dominate lesser teams. But against a team such as Stanford they just can't match the firepower of a Nnamani who can take over a 5th game. I was just wondering what others thought might help the Bruins get over this wall

IMHO, it's the coach..for not preparing the team mentally and physically for 5 game matches...UCLA never cease to amaze me in the kind of talent they have..so I think it's more of the conditoning than talent

Having only one or two superstars without the remaining being balanced leaves gaps in the rotations. These are vulneralbilities that the opponent can exploit and target in on. This is what Florida did to the Wahines last year in the Final Four, despite Hawaii's having the most feared LS hitter all-american tandem in Kim Willouby and Lily Kahanamoku. On the other hand, not having true killers on the team can cause scoring opportunites to go haywire. I think if a team is going to be balanced without superstars, I might add, it needs to be fast and quick, very much like Georgia Tech has been in recent times. The Wahine started off the year just as quick, but began to peter off. I don't know why. Maybe because of inexperience. UCLA lost to Hawaii at the beginning of the year. The result might have been different had they played at the latter part.

I don't know what is up with UCLA losing 5 game matches, perhaps it's all mental?

Toughest one I saw them lose was the Region final v. Wisconsin in Porter, Bachman, Selser, Bowles' senior year. I forget the DS's name that was so good.
That was one talented team that FINALLY seemed to be putting it together there at the end. But not quite.

Michelle Quon. And I guess only she and Bachman were seniors. The others were juniors. + Fendrick.
