Wasn't talking about the school so the coach was a problem and has a history of problems? Anyone stop to consider, maybe the next coach was already in place, the announcement now so they didn't have to pay out two salaries at once, and the hiring search a formality??

I'm sorry, but this an absolutely dick move. There may be more to the story than just deciding not to renew a contract. The question should really be did the AD practice social distancing when tell her, did he tell her over the phone, through email, or breaking the rules and in person?

Merrimack College (DI, near Boston) had actually started process before virus shut everything down. HAd 4 people on Campus in early March and picked top 2 from those 4. Virus has since shut everything down. They are unsure when a hire may be made and if current candidates will still be interested.

Otherwise you are hiring someone in July.

It wouldn't surprise me if university administration asked what exactly would the coach be doing for the next 2 months and told the athletic department the coach can't start until August 1.

Why do schools do a coaching search as a "formality" when they already have their coach picked out? Is it unlawful to hire someone internally without a search?

Whether the school's rules are a legal thing or just for looks I'm not sure. Legally, jobs must be publicly posted and qualified applicants are to be considered, not necessarily interviewed... Why do schools do a coaching search as a "formality" when they already have their coach picked out? Is it unlawful to hire someone internally without a search? Depends on the school. Most public institutions require that the job be posted for x- number of days. It is part of the law for any positions for state schools or even state government jobs. Private schools usually have more leeway. At some schools it has to do with the union and the process for hiring any staff or faculty. Often hiring someone as interim is a step to get around this process. In some cases, the AD cannot hire coaches. The hiring must go through a committee involving other coaches and departments. They have to go through a multi-step interview process for every hire. Hiring a coach as interim can skip this process. Then next year, when the job gets posted, the interim coach already has a year under their belt.
