I don’t think it’s cool for the coach to make a statement about her. We don’t know what people are going through. These are tough times. I wish her the best. She's had 2 concussions in the last year. That is very hard on your body. Maybe she just needs a break.

hope she can find joy in volleyball again. I'm sure the coaching staff is in communication with her, and will support her no matter what she decides to do. we'd be lucky to have her. I’d be willing to bet a lot of money that there’s something going on between her and the head coach at her high school. I’m not saying he did anything wrong, but something about his approach or how he’s addressed team dynamics doesn’t sit well with her. It could be something at home or her personal life, but at 6’4 there aren’t a lot of safe spaces you can walk into without feeling ion some level like you’re a bit of a freak. The volleyball court should be a respite from that, but instead here she wants to get away from it. Don’t forget, she’s still going to that high school, based on what we know. So she now has all the drama of everyone wondering what happened (or possibly worse, everyone knowing exactly what happened) added in to all the struggles all of us go through at that age, while doing it as a 6’4 woman with all the challenges that presents for an 18 year old. This isn’t going to be a solution for her, but I do hope this is the right decision to help her address whatever the issue is. My heart goes out to her. Whatever she’s struggling with it has to seem big to her, and there’s likely a significant sense of isolation she’s undergoing right now.

Insightful analysis on the daily issues she faces.
Agreed on the coach- he knows exactly why she left, whatever the reason. Reminded me of Cook and Caffey.

There was an anonymous post on a volleyball facebook group today:
"This renowned program is highly ranked across the nation every year, yet it comes at a cost. Sydney Helmers was not the first to want to quit, she's just the first to actually do it. Despite the negative connotation that comes with the word "quitting", Sydney earned a lot of respect from a majority of that program's alumni today for advocating for herself and her well-being when most of them couldn't or wouldn't in her same position."
I'm guessing she was planning to graduate early and not playing 18s at KIVA?

Asjia O'Neal sat out her senior high school season, but played club in the spring.

At what point do we set up a rotating camp in Hawaii? I love the island connection. There's no place more passionate about volleyball. It's the equivalent of high school football in Texas.

I think the Assumptions coach is the 18s coach at Kiva, but I could be wrong though. Assumption’s head coach is coaching legend Ron Kordes, and KIVA 14-1 Coach. He’s one of the kindest men you’ll ever meet and always has kids’ best interests in mind. I absolutely agree with the earlier post that playing at Assumption is highly stressful as they expect to win state every year, and are often in the national championship picture. The athlete had two concussions last season (the second of which was on ESPN) and missed the post season. I’d imagine she’s terrified of getting hit in the head again, losing volleyball altogether, and that’s taking the joy out of the game.

All of that can be true, but if he had Helmers' best interests at heart he would have phrased his public comments differently. That doesn't mean he's not the kindest man in the western world. Although I've rarely seen anyone achieve tremendous success without having someone somewhere along the way not think so. Getting the most out of other people often means behaving in a way that's easily perceived as not kind. The fact is we don't know why she's leaving the team, and it's none of our business, really. If her doctor is still seeing signs of the concussion having an impact on her, or she's suffering from migraines regularly or another side effect, no one could blame her for taking a step back from volleyball. I wish Kordes's public comments on the matter would have better reflected that.

That's not someone who has another person's best interest in mind.
