Is there a limit to the number of years a scholarship player can be on scholarship? Ie for a redshirted player, can it be 5 years? I'm ignoring Covid years. Based on what some parents and coaches have been saying on a couple of other threads, it seems that less-than-4 year offers are happening more frequently as coaches try to maintain flexibility for transfers. There’s no limit to the years a player can be on scholarship. As long as they have eligibility, they can have a scholarship. That’s the limitation. Their years of eligibility. I find the whole 2+2 and 3+1 offers (pay your own way for 2 or 3 years in return for an assurance of 2 or 1 year of scholarship time) to be a complete crock of sh*t in a sport that’s supposed to be a full scholarship sport. Either it shouldn’t even pretend and go the way of softball, swimming, gymnastics, etc., or the sport should extend the number of scholarship positions to better field a full roster.

It's really no different than men's football and men's and women's basketball. If you aren't on scholarship your first season, you are considered a walk-on. Any future years on scholarship are based on performance and scholarship availability.

Prior to COVID, a high school recruit who signed an LOI with their college would have up to 5 (scholarship) seasons to exhaust the maximum 4 seasons of eligibility. That basically included one non-medical redshirt season. Obviously, injuries change things (mostly in the student-athletes favor), and there are exceptions for a 6th season.

But, that "assurance" doesn't hold water; just ask John Cook.

Maybe long snappers, punters and kickers in football. But, that "assurance" doesn't hold water; just ask John Cook. No, not even those positions. If they win the position, probably. But plenty of long snappers who never receive a scholarship. And yeah, I'm well aware that assurance isn't inviolable. It's the biggest reason I think it's a crock of sh*t. Heck, put enough pressure on a player and you can make her feel so unwelcome she'll voluntarily head elsewhere. That's a big way coaching staffs make scholarship room, frankly. Even football always had the reality that you're offering 25 scholarships per year for players who have 5 years of eligibility for a sport that only has 85 scholarships available. It was a systemic encouragement of attrition, which always bothered me as well. Now it's a different world with the portal.

Saw a recent follow for Elliott and Hunt was a player named Zeynep Palabiyik. madden55 Does this name mean anything to you? Would she be a possible recruit similar to Guctekin?
