Disagree? I'm not giving you an opinion. For the same reason that Butler decided she wasn't returning before she had exhausted her eligibility, every player is looking ahead and deciding what they want to do before they have exhausted their eligibility. That is simply what is happening. Can Butler change still change her mind and decide to return? Yes When will she no longer be able to change her mind and decide to return? It possibly could be as late as next August as long as she hasn't turned pro and is still academically eligible. That date certainly hasn't passed. Will Elliott take her back if she decides to return? Most likely and if he doesn't, I feel safe in saying there will a long line of coaches willing to take her as a transfer. Not unless she wants to pay for grad school. Her scholarship has already been allocated. That's what I'm trying to tell you... Edit: If she decided to transfer would of course have offers but again, the earlier she's in the portal, the more schools will still have scholarships available.

I could have sworn that 4th year seniors like Lexi Sun and Stephanie Samedy decided fairly late to publicly announce they would return for a fifth season. And, don't think Lauren Stivrins has made any kind of public announcement (but, her situation may be health-related).
But, this will be the only season where a roster can have more than 12 'ships.

Different situation because of the scholarship exemption. Decisions are being made now and if a kid does change their mind, they'd better be prepared to pay for that extra year or enter the portal.

Last week, Stivrins announced she is returning. She may not play right away, though, because she has been recovering from back surgery and isn't in volleyball shape.

So this year the athlete is still on scholarship but anyone wanting to stay a fifth year MOVING FORWARD would have to pay for it? Aka, juniors and sophomore? A coach could extend their scholarship one year, but isn’t obligated to do so.

For starters, it doesn't have to be grad school. It can still be undergraduate. If she wanted to return, I suspect there is a good chance that there would be a ship for her come next August even if they are all "allocated". Or maybe she gets an NIL offer that covers her school expenses plus. Also I feel certain if she wanted to transfer, there would be a number of schools with full allocations that would have a ship available. Or what happens if the ground rules change some and the NCAA decides to relax the ship limit for super seniors for an additional 1-3 years? Besides you are trying to argue a point that wasn't even the context of the discussion where the original post was made.

I'm stating that Butler knew she wasn't returning before she exhausted her eligibility. She informed the staff before she exhausted her eligibility. As have many, many other players in similar situations. Those decisions aren't public yet, but they needed to be made for coaches to allocate scholarships and they have been made. They're not waiting until next August to make the 'real' decision.

Wait, only THIS years seniors get that schollie exception? So butler can play, but it’s either off schollie or not. The schools can’t fundraise like they do for current seniors? And likewise, tech butler, unlike sun, could remain on an athletic schollie?

And likewise, tech butler, unlike sun, could remain on an athletic schollie? Schools are only able to exceed the 12 scholarship limit for THIS fall. So every subsequent Covid senior can be on scholarship but there must be an available scholarship for that player. Coaches are having to decide who they can bring back and save those scholarships. That is why these conversations are already taking place.

We all know that rosters are fluid, and attrition can occur at any time. A player or two who the coaches are confident will return the following season might have a change of heart and move on; unexpected 'ships do become available, and sometimes it's due to a player's health (like Capri Davis, Blair Westerlund, Tiffany Baker, Ashley Bannister, etc).

I might be looking too much into this but Logan posted a tiktok today about "First Day of Senior Year". It's all speculation but it sucks that we don't know the who situation of who is staying when.
