I should be clear my position is that we’re losing Kahahawai regardless. To me the choice isn’t between Kahahawai and Lauenstein. It’s between Lauenstein and Byrd (or Helmers/Tomkinson). Byrd still has a chance of beating her out, so we’ll see. My preference is to see the youngsters play. Personally I want a clearer path to playing time, but it’s simply a personal preference, not a real critique. I felt the same way with Wenaas, but she’s earned the starting position, regardless of my feelings about it. It's also not clear that (i) Lauenstein would choose Texas; or (ii) if she did, that she would definitely beat out Byrd/Helmers/Tomkinson. Byrd currently looks like the most dynamic of the bunch, but we've yet to see an indoor swing from Helmers and only the short pregame warmups from Tomkinson. Lauenstein probably would have an easier path to starter at Louisville with Aiko Jones leaving. but louisville has moved reese robins (who was recruited as a middle) to opp to replace jones...so this might not be true...reese has been training as an opp lately

So I wasn't that keen on Lauenstein, but her stats from 2022 are good. She only hit .238 on the season, but was Nebraska's leading total point scorer despite only paying 3 rotations. She was also the second best blocker on the team at 1.07 blocks/set, which I did not expect. Horde was #1, Allick was #3. I agree with slxpress, signing Lauenstein means saying goodbye to Devin. She's too good to ride the bench another year. I wish we had more data to compare Devin and Lauenstein though I should be clear my position is that we’re losing Kahahawai regardless. Why would she stay? She only has two years of eligibility left. She has seen limited meaningful playing time her first two years. Why take a chance with a staff that’s not going out of their way to get her on the court? She needs to go some place where she has a much stronger opportunity to see the court. If Lauenstein wasn’t coming in she’d still be competing against Byrd/Helmers/Tomkinson. If the staff was prioritizing keeping her they would have played her more. That’s my feeling on it.

Will be interesting to see what she does IF she does leave, my money is she goes to usc She could be on the Orie track, and all this convo I for nothing

Playing time vs the school Oh yeah I get it. I’m just not a fan of people penciling her out already. It’s like damn… maybe she’ll stay cause she just loves the school enough. I’ll also say, winning a natty involves having the best bench possible, and we had that last season. A lot of would be bud former starters playing different roles rhw they’re used to, but that’s necessary to be the best.

She only got 1 kill on 3 attempts. I remember her playing Wright State with 7 kills hitting .455%!

Whoever it was, was definitely not on Lauenstein's level

I’ve seen some people think a player should just stay because it’s Texas and the player should want to stay for the good of the program. Not just in volleyball. Football fans at times over the years have been notorious for it. Last year’s bench was an alltimer. Bergmark, Pierce, Parra, Kahahawai, Ewert, Miller, Heinrich. But it comes at a cost. Bergmark admits she wanted to give up volleyball. Parra and Pierce transfer. Kahahawai uses up a year of eligibility for inconsequential playing time. We may never see a bench like that. Holding up last year’s bench as some kind of ideal is unrealistic.

Holding up last year’s bench as some kind of ideal is unrealistic. I know it's not relevant to the scholarship count, but I think Miller might transfer too. She's good enough to get decent playing time at other schools- the coaches did right by Pierce and I'm sure they'd make some calls if Kenna decided to transfer. I'd be sad to see her go - IMO she and Crownover have really brought intangibles to the team in terms of camaraderie and are the team's biggest hypemen on the sidelines
