Does this mean Parra will be a '21? Or is someone leaving? I don't think she'd come as a non-scholarship player. But a welcome addition as Texas needs depth at the pins. One thing to consider, scholarship-wise, is that Micaya graduated May 2019. So, she's been "going to grad school", but may just drop out of Spring 2020 and play pro. Then, Davis can take her second-half of the 2019-2020 scholarship. Keep in mind that setter, Naomi Cabello is enrolling this January; really happy about this as a setter can use all the reps the can get prior to one day hopefully becoming a starting setter. So, a 'ship has to be available for her.
Ashely Shook not showing up at Texas until August 2017 was a huge blow IMO, and most Texas fans felt the same as she was all but assured the starting setter job as a true freshman. While the decision was hers to continue play with her summer club even after graduating from high school, it was in no way a good move for the 2017 Texas squad.
So, here's my 2020 scholarship allotment assumptions:
Seniors: Ashley Shook Juniors: Brionne Butler, Logan Eggleston, Sydney Petersen, Jhenna Gabriel, Capri Davis (unless she is eligible for a medical redshirt season for 2019)
Sophomores: Asjia O'Neal, Skylar Fields, Molly Phillips Freshmen: Naomi Cabello, Nalani Iosia, Madison Williams, Melanie Parra (unsigned)
That's 13 players, and the limit is 12 scholarships.
So, I could be wrong that Gabriel is/will be on 'ship. I could be wrong that Capri Davis is coming in as a scholarship player, but since Texas did issue an official statement today about her "signing", I deduce that she will be on scholarship beginning in January 2020.
We'll probably know more about the 2020 roster over the next 4-5 weeks or so.

Agree with you on many of your points. I think that Shook's lack of time with her hitters really hurt her play and her confidence. I had forgotten the fact that Cabello could be using White's Spring portion of the scholarship. Or, she could be paying her own way through Spring?
The only thing that I might disagree with; 1) Capri Davis played 9 games out of 33 possible games for Nebraska - I don't think she would qualify under redshirt rules. 2) No one has come out and said if she was injured and sounds like no one is forthcoming. Again, 9/33. I know in women's basketball as long has they haven't played 1/4 of the games in a season. In volleyball? Don't know 3) While I believe that Davis will be on scholarship, I don't think an announcement of a signing equates to scholarship. After all, all our walk-on DS'es also had signings as well.
But yeah, Cabello is a smart cookie to come in Spring and get some real reps in. I wanna see what she can bring because I want a new setter!

For 2019, we only had 11 scholarship players: White, Fisbeck, Agbaji, Shook, Butler, Eggleston, Petersen, Gabriel, O'Neal, Fields, Phillips.
Micaya White graduated in May; I'm assuming she will be moving on to her professional career since she has been at Texas 4.5 years. If so, that's two 'ships open for Spring 2020.

Two of the more interesting folks who started following Capri on twitter today include Logan Eggleston and Ashley Shook. I'm more interested in who else Shook is following? Nobody else of significance that I could see.

When I went up to the Baylor game in Waco and I saw this loooong line of players standing at the end of the court, I had to do a quick count: 20 players!
But two of them were in sweats and obviously not going to play.
Knowing that college volleyball is a "full head" scholarship (Jerritt's words - which mean they can't be split amongst players) of 12, that means that that 8 of the players are walk-ons.
This is especially boggling to me since private schools are so expensive (Baylor about $64K/year, Stanford about $68K/year) for 8 players to pay their own way to be practice players for most of their time there.
Longwinded statement by me. My question is why is it so hard for Texas to find walk-on players?
Looking back at the last 5 years:
2015 Kate Palladino Lauren Beard Natalie Gilbert
2016 Palladino Beard Gilbert Claire Hahn Autumn Roundsaville
2017 Gilbert Hahn Roundsaville Olivia Zelon
2018 Hahn Roundsaville
2019 Hahn Roundsaville
Notes: 1) Palladino spent one year as a "regular" A&M student, transferred to Texas and then walked on the team 2) Palladino, Beard and Gilbert left the team to concentrate on school before their full eligibility was used up - but all remained friendly to the program as they often showed up to games to cheer on their old teammates 3) Zelon was redshirted her only year at Texas. She was BFF with Sun and infamously quit the program torching any bridges she had with the team. Ironically, she stayed on at UT as a student.
The reason I ask this is that a couple times this year, one of our backrow players would be having a tough time in a set and Jerritt would pull them for Autumn. But if both Autumn and Claire were both having a bad time, then there wasn't an alternative to try?
An odd side-thread to this: Would/could we might get players to UT if we offered beach volleyball?

Coach Elliott "found" Jhenna Gabriel as a walk-on for 2018! She might have been the most impactful walk-on EVER at Texas.

"Knowing that college volleyball is a "full head" scholarship (Jerritt's words - which mean they can't be split amongst players) of 12, that means that that 8 of the players are walk-ons." Even if it's all or nothing I believe that there is a way to "split" scholarships, by giving a full for one year but giving nothing for another year. So if player X gets a full for 3 years and nothing for her 4th year, she has effectively been given a 75 percent scholarship. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is something that is done.

2020 Recruit: S - Naomi Cabello (Clermont, FL) OH - Madison Williams (Mansfield, TX) OH - Melanie Parra (Mexico) - hasn't signed, yet. Attending high school in Round Rock, TXL/DS - Nalani Iosia (Redondo (Torrance, CA) L/DS - Reilly Heinrich (Leander, TX) OH - Capri Davis (Mansfield, TX) - 2020 Spring Nebraska transfer
2021 Recruit:
2022 Recruit:
What do you think we need the most for 2021 recruit? Setter? MB? Pin Hitter? Libero? I think we need a 6 rotation outside to deepen the bench. We will have two solid setters, solid DSs, MBs but we will be thin with only two 6 rotation hitters at the moment unless they develop Skylar or Capri.

2021 will be interesting. JE already mentioned that they have had some recruiting misses for that year as there are girls who want to play immediately and don't see that opportunity at Texas. I'm wondering if this could be a year where they eventually go after high-profile transfers. Who knows, maybe Jenna Weenas will get home sick and want to come back home

By my recollection, we won't have a 2021 scholarship available now that Capri has joined. But, haven't looked at the numbers too recently. All depends on if there is an attrition between now and then.

I believe the rule is that if a player is given a scholarship as a true freshman, it is for four years (as it can't be revoke without cause). So, this would be the majority of our players.
But, for those who are not given a scholarship as true freshmen, they can be awarded one on an individual annual basis. Perhaps this was the situation for Jhenna Gabriel. And, maybe Claire Hahn received one this season as it seems (based on assumption) that we only had 11 scholarship players on the roster.

Capri played for Texas Image (that's where Molly played, right?).
Read an article the other day from when she committed to Nebraska after he sophomore season, and she indicated she had been playing middle blocker up until she was to make the switch to OH as a junior.
